for a game whose key components boil down to ghosting and trackmaking, we should have a definitive community list formed at this point of who's good and who's not, and I'm not sure why we don't. there should be a way to quantify how good someone is, and then display it in a way similar to how the point leaderboards on the site do. my initial thought was to come up with some sort of equation to do this and come up with a number, but I realized there were too many variables to account for (consistency, tracks completed, place in the community, average leaderboard placing on good tracks vs. cruddy ones, featured ghosts, etc.), and that most variables would be impossible to quantify, so that idea was out the window.
but I still have 2 other ideas as to how we could come up with this definitive list:
1. collect a bunch of lists from around the community, weigh them accordingly (i.e a veteran like mr..a's list would hold more credence than some idiot), then create an aggregate list that way. this'd work similar to the ap poll for college basketball or tier lists for smash bros. this has both upsides and downsides to it, upsides being that it'd be free from most individual bias and would be a solid list given that it'd be formulated by community members who know what they're talking about. that being said, downsides would include that it would suffer from an elitist bias from community members (basically excluding most of the player base) and it'd be difficult to update and maintain.
2. hold competitions after a set period of time. this would be cool because if done often and well enough it could result in many more people joining the community as well as results that hold very little bias. there's also previous examples to take inspiration from such as
Dblu's FRHD World Cup or speedy_xd's racing competition from 2014 (which I can't find a link for but the tracks are there on his profile if you want to look for them). downsides to this would be that it'd be hard to include as many people as we would need to come up with a definitive list, as well as being very hard to maintain especially when considering how often the competitions would need to be held and how large they would need to be.
so until something is designed by someone to fix this problem, the best thing we have to rank ghosters is subjective lists like these or
votes held by community members. I think something like the second option would be great for this cause and would also help revitalize the community as a whole, so it'd be awesome if some dedicated person put something together.
