      You're overcomplicating it. Dont do the colouring thing and just keep it as simple as you can. Start of doing trees with like 4 branches. First of all make it like 3 times as tall and a lot skinnier as well. then just dont add to much.

      Here's a quick drawing of kinda the area you got going on. its not the nicest tree :p but I hope you get the idea.

      e: It would look much better (what I drew) if you gradually made the tree tinner. I got some parts where it gets slightly thicker that makes it look ugly

      If you use the magnet tool, itll look cleaner too. As max said make the trees thinner, but also make them taller
