What Does a Good Article Look Like?
Here's an example from our one and only
Volund. It is a couple of years old, though, so some of the information is outdated.
Track makers are being dissuaded from playing this game, and as more of them leave, less people are ready to take their place. And as this cycle continues, the standard of tracks drops lower and lower. As the standard drops lower and lower, so too does people’s interest in this game. What is it which makes creating a “feature-worthy” track pointless to track-creators? It comes down to three things: a lack of incentive, a lack of updates and a lack of competition.
There are basically four incentives a track maker would have to build a great track: likes, a feature, official author, and a spot in the campaign. They aren’t the best incentives available, particularly for people who spend weeks and months at a time on one track. And seeing as though Official Author and the Campaigns are somewhat irrelevant currently, that leaves two incentives to creators. I just do not think it is enough to encourage people to spend a good amount of time creating a new and exciting track. There should be more incentive for creators, though what they might be, I am unsure. I do think it is something that the developers should look at, and something which track makers should talk about.
Updates are important to keep a community interested, and this applies to track makers as much as anyone else. New tools, new vehicles, new features, all can give track makers the drive to create something new. Of course, the developers have recently been focused solely on the FRHD app, and so updates in-game have been put aside for the time being. However, it does not mean that we as a community cannot give them ideas to implement in-game. How about new vehicles? New items, such as teleporters and switches? New features, such as coloured lines or lines of different sizes? The possibilities are endless, and I know that I personally would be excited to use any of these features.
The final thing which dissuades track creators from doing their best is a lack of competition. FRHD needs another Official Contest, or short of that, a contest run by the community of the same idea and stature. I believe that a large scale contest will help reinvigorate track makers of all skill levels. There have been very few contests this year, and the few that have been big, have had weak competition. A competition which forces each track maker to do their all to win, would not only benefit individuals, but also the community as a whole. With any luck, another Official Contest will be held sometime in the next 12 months, and provide the competitive atmosphere that the community so desperately needs.
What's Expected of a Writer?
The current expectation is one article per issue. Doing more gives you a higher status on the team, whereas doing less may result in getting kicked off the FRHD News Team.
