001 was a small little introduction to a friend of mine's SundayAfternoon collaboration effort. here's a quote from him, explaining the purpose of the group:

it truly boils down the essence of what Free Rider (and gaming in general) is to a lot of people: fun. a time away from the stress of life and enjoyment of other people's work. even when some the hardcore artists make tracks, they do it as they find creating and drawing to be fun. but sometimes we get caught up in the artistry and detail of the beautiful tracks that have been made, and other times we might fall in love with speedy ghosts and the competition of racing. while these aspects can be instrumental in adding interest in the game and may be fun at times, they can add stress back into the equation. even the best detailers might spend countless hours harshly pushing themselves into being better than the next guy, and the best ghosters might break their fingers trying to shave mere seconds off their times.

Colorado wanted to strip back the excess and simply give us fun, something that games are wonderful at doing. the group does a great job of collecting these tracks. there were a few rules for the tracks to follow the motto: no stars, must be fun, can't be too hard. simple enough. I followed the criteria the best I could (you know I love the hard stuff, the harder the better if you ask me ;))

usually my tracks follow the same outline! no stars is something I love to stand by, especially for my skateparks. they're simply about fun, doing tricks, and really taking your time to just soak in the ramps and rails. here in 001, you have a nice little foam pit with some paths leading up to it. nothing too complicated, but it shows a lot of my current style. smooth jumps, two higher platforms for extra entry points. the more trick lines, the better, right? and I threw in some nice and simple technical detail to set off the theme, but that wasn't necessary. the real fun is in feeling like a pro when you drop down from the flag path, speed down and up the jump, and nailing a double backflip into the pit. or maybe you prefer taking it slow, crawling up the first ramp, finessing wheelie and endo tricks over the smoke stack, and then jumping up to the smaller jump and seeing if you can get enough air to frontflip. or if you're feeling like taking a dive, the diving board is at your disposal. I don't know, but I love thinking about that sort of stuff. that's fun to me. while playing, maybe you can get a glimpse into what I'm interested in. while remixing, you can get an even better look, and add your own stuff to it!

remixing is a fantastic way to get inside the head of a trackmaker. it's collaboration in a sense. but in a collab, you aren't there to cash in on the effort of the other person or to steal their style. you're there to compliment their work, to share your abilities and add you to something beautiful. I know that sounds a lil off, but read it again. ADD YOU to something beautiful. you+something beautiful=remixing! your influence can be any amount of things, and it can be any size. it can be track, detail, art, farts, anything. and when you're in the equation, you can shake things up. this is an opportunity to expand, alter, disfigure, blow up, and/or just collaborate with someone. maybe turn their ramp into a dragon, erase their shitty foam pit and add a ******* DRAGON in its place, or just add dragons in the background. do whatever you want. be the damn dragon master.

for an example: 003 tsunami, another SundayAfternoon track made by one of the greatest: Alexander. I had to remix this track in a previous remix contest, and here was my result: tsu cube. I didn't cause too much damage! but I played with the track a bit, fixed up the jumps subtly for that classic Ness feel, added some vertical layers to it, implemented my 3D to create a nice focal point, and threw some detail in. added some herp to his derp, if you feel me. and honestly, playing with his track gave me a lot of respect for how he does things. this was instrumental in seeing his talent, and along with his fantastic work on his other tracks (including another couple remixes he had worked on), viewing these deeper than surface level allowed me to truly appreciate his talent. and now we're collaborating on a couple of the best tracks the game will ever see. just sayin, remixing is special.

hopefully the act of remixing will inspire you to look a little closer at the work of others. the people around you are talented, just as you are. and working together is a wonderful thing, in all shapes and forms. have fun with it, and good luck in the contest homies.
