So our usually peaceful community doesn't dissolve into a hate-filled flame fest

Just because someone says something contrary to someone else doesn't mean it's an argument. There's no reason this should get closed.

It's possible to have intelligent debates without becoming flame fests. This thread does not need to be closed because of differing opinions.

"I know that I know nothing" - - Socratic Paradox

I'm a very spiritual person and not religious, I consider myself a pantheist. Many of you are in a completely ego-based concrete way of thinking, which you should not be! First, you must admit to yourself that you are unsure of the origin of the Universe and Life. None of us know the absolute truth, and many religions and theories try to fill the hole of uncertainty. The Big Bang Theory is just a theory, and Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc are still just religions. But before disregarding any ideology, you must understand basic fundamentals of nature. Why would you think that a 'Big Bang' could not have happened? I'm not speaking to anyone specifically, just for the purpose of abstract comparison, we were all made from the nutrients of the foods that your mother consumed while you were developing inside her stomach, so essentially, we are all made from what our mother ate. That seems really strange if you think about it right?- at one point we were just random proteins from a banana your mom ingested and now we are all so much more developed and expansive. So what makes the Big Bang any less plausible since basic life and being born/growing is pretty crazy entirely in itself? I mean who knows, the most outrageous theory there is out there could be the one that is right! The only certainty that we know of in life is that death is inevitable, and that is the only conviction. I believe 'God' is everything that is in primordial existence. We are all part of God, because we are connected to all that is, which is everything! Unconditional love is the most primitive form of 'God' we can feel. I believe once we die, our consciousness leaves our body (forget who we are, what we are, where we are, lose our name and all our memories) and we become closer to 'God'-the emotion of true love, in its most rudimentary appearance. Imagine living a life where you don't have a physical body, or a logical mind- and cannot make any memories (because it would be impossible to have experiences) and all you are is just energy constantly flowing through many areas of spacetime, and all you know and feel is an euphoric sense of connective bliss? That is how I imagine what after-death will be like. But like I said who knows, maybe reincarnation is the ineffable truth...

In the end, debating religion is useless because people will always have opposing beliefs. Although I will say religion has been the root cause for almost every war throughout human existence; extremely ironic since most preaches peace, heh.

I agree. At the end of the day everything is subject to guess work and theory's, no actual 110% fact. And just sayin, not all religions start wars. WWII was started by a psycho! And other wars started are usually by extremists, who merely want a reason for war, not because of religion. You cant tell me that all Muslims think like Islamic state fighters.

I agree, most wars are started by extremists, but usually of religion or beliefs in ideologys (also including being a Gypsy or Homosexual in Hitler's case). That's probably what Jake is stating, or at least putting ideally. No, most Muslims are pretty indifferent to Western culture, but the War on Terror was started in point of extreme beliefs on religion.

Hey guys real quick its crane here - but if i could just really quickly explain the word 'theory' in a scientific context.
A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed through observation and experimentation.
Saying _____ is just a theory is the equivalent of saying _____ is just a fact.
The Big Bang Theory is pretty set in stone as the thing that happened at the moment of or extremely shortly after the creation of the universe.
We will never know what happened before the big bang, what caused the big bang, whether it was caused by a previous universe imploding, blah blah blah - so that part is up to you to decide which explanation suits you best - God, not God, something else. I just wanted to make it clear the big bang theory happened - but what caused it, what was there before it - those are up to you to fill in the blanks.
Its important to me that even if youre religious that you can still believe in what we know for sure about the universe. Just because youre a christian doesnt mean you cant accept the Big Bang or Evolution - because it may be that this God everyone keeps talking about caused them.
Basically what I'm trying to say is if you are religious dont be afraid to accept what we know as truth along with your beliefs
If your athiest or generally just more scientific in your outlook then also dont be afraid to accept the gaps in our knowledge that should be speculated about

Anyway I really dont have religion or beliefs, i just live and whatever happens happens, there is a lot less stress this way, and i dont have to fight against any religions in everyday life. plus, religion holds you back, at least it made me feel like i was in a cage hiding behind something, now when i look at people strict in religion i see boundaries.

It's kind of the same for me, I believe God created part of the universe and then the big bang and evolution kinda sprang up from there. So I'm basically in the happy middle x)
