hello everyone, volundthony codtano here...
Recently listened to:
> Modjo, Modjo - first 3 songs were 10/10, then the album nosedives and becomes really samey and meh. im really sad they disbanded after this album, because if they built on what they had in the first few songs they couldve been as good as Daft Punk (hot take lolz)
Favourite Song: Lady - Hear Me Tonight
Album Score: 4/10, not mad just disappointed
> Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus - cool album but really dont see the hype for it, seems like a RYM "it's quirky, so it's cool". Yasuke better album idc. really good album to study to though
Favourite Song: Do the Astral Plane
Album Score: 6/10, too hyped up imo but not bad
> Watch the Throne, Kanye West & Jay Z - didnt bother listening to it until now as people made the album sound like it was uninteresting/one of kanye's "worst", but it's incredible. who wouldve thought jay-z and kanye make good music together lol ! the final songs of the album arent nearly as good as the first 10 or so, but i wouldnt call this one of kanye's weakest albums by any stretch of the imagination
Favourite Song: New Day
Album Score: 7.75/10, jay-z and kanye killed it
> Stay Hungry, Twisted Sister - sick album, my favourite album recently. every song is amazing, really great motivational music, not much to say because i just love it all, please listen if you havent already
Favourite Song: Stay Hungry
Album Score: 10/10, idk how id improve on this album and loved all the songs
> Give Me The Future, Bastille - i was expecting more, honestly. their shortest album yet and it feels empty rather than cohesive. i usually love short albums (see: kids see ghosts, ye, stay hungry, rubber soul, help!) but unlike these albums, it just has no major substance and no time to flesh out the themes they wanted to explore - the evolution of tech getting out of hand, critiques of capitalism and constant progress, problems of modern day politics and more. im not going to pretend like their themes arent normative, but that doesnt mean the themes shouldnt be fleshed out properly. there's 3 songs (interludes) on here at less than 1:30 length, and when your tracklist is 13 songs long and only 5 of them are longer than 3 minutes, you just dont have room to stuff around. what's left feels unfinished because of this, it feels like theyre gearing it for a deluxe version before they even released this, which is cash-grabby imo. they have done deluxe editions with 2/3 of their previous albums, but the difference is that Bad Blood and Doom Days both felt finished before their deluxe versions All This Bad Blood and Doom Days (This Got Out Of Hand Edition). Give Me The Future does not feel finished at all, which is a shame, as the electronic/futuristic sound they have gunned for in this album is really refreshing and produced quite well. ironically, i am hoping for the future, one in which the deluxe version lives up to what i hope it can achieve
Favourite Song: Plug In...
Album Score: 6.5/10, self aware enough to know that im being generous but not self aware enough to care : P
> By Your Side - Breakbot - i had a few weeks where i wanted to listen to french house, and stumbled upon this, Modjo and 1999 by Cassius. first of all, 1999 is mid as fudge and was difficult to listen to the whole album start to finish, so im not giving it its own dot point. i listened to By Your Side after 1999, and holy hell the difference in quality is insane. each song is distinct and funky, boasting great dance music and iconic songs like Baby I'm Yours. very impressed and really scratched my french house/disco/dance itch
Favourite Song: Programme
Album Score: 7.5/10 really fun album ~
tl;dr listen to Watch The Throne, Stay Hungry and By Your Side, great albums
