personally I think the two versions are pretty hard to compare or rank... Thom and his wife separated last year, so the song as it is on AMSP has taken on a completely new meaning, which really makes the tone of the new version chilling for me. before the song had a hopeful sort and even naive quality to it, now it's Thom as a 47 year old man who has just separated with his partner of 23 years. it's the opposite of hope now, it's resignation, maybe even bitterness, and that's portrayed really well through the sparse, haunting piano and Thom's vocals. both versions are great but they're different songs on completely different emotional spectrums.

 

I'm pretty sure they were never married, so if that's the case, she was never his wife.
Nonetheless, it's all speculation whether or not their separation has an influence on this album (it likely does though) but it doesn't change the fact that to me, personally, the original acoustic variation of the song was better overall. It had more emotion and felt more genuine, and not every song sounds better when slowed down and performed on piano. That said, I have yet to listen to this album with headphones on since I'm in the middle of moving into my first apartment so I imagine it won't be so bad when heard that way, but I still stand on my personal opinion that it should have been left in its original form. Radiohead kind of went overboard with piano on this album, which somewhat dulled the emotional and thematic impact that it would have had otherwise possibly. It's as they say, sometimes less is more.
e; But listening to it now, it may grow on me somewhat in the future.
