Jumping on this post since it's actually an interesting glitch that would make for cool ghosts/ vehicle ghosts.
Gonna quickly point out for those that don't know, spirits is my alt and all the tracks utilizing the vehicle glitch there were created by me. To my knowledge there's only 3 decent tracks that the glitch can unintentionally be abused in order to get a better time. almost all others are made with the intention of using the glitch in order for the track to be completed.
The tracks I've seen it unintentionally used in are:
https://www.freeriderhd.com/t/533480-difficult - This is, from what I can tell, the first track where the glitch was ever used to get a leader board time. first done by clockwe2 who told no one. then re-discovered by Rob who was going through his old tracks and then popularized by me after I helped rob figure out how it works and made a sh.it ton of tracks about it since I like it so much.

https://www.freeriderhd.com/t/462398-heli-sesh/r/cronk - My personal favourite. due to my lack of skill, I couldn't personally pull off a good ghost using the glitch, so I pretty much gave cork a walkthrough of what to do on his alt in the main discord voice call lmao. The first part of the ghost using a lesser used part of the glitch where you can bring time from a vehicle back to a previous vehicle as long as you were on the checkpoint with the vehicle. doing so cuts around 2 seconds off the ascent of the second helicopter part. Then from there it's only a matter of using the glitch to get double heli time to skip the 4th helicopter section. from there it's pretty much just a trial to the end. I like this track a lot because it's easily the track with the biggest unintentional skips using the glitch. and due to the difficulty of the track it would make for a good vehicle feat if the track were to be optimized further and ghosted without deaths.
The way you described it is pretty close but there's some stuff you missed and got slightly wrong. Let me explain pretty much how it works from my own understanding.
Firstly, you must have passed through a checkpoint previously at any point in the track to use the glitch.
Secondly, by pressing enter (or backspace in the case of going through multiple checkpoints) on the same 0.03 framerule that you interact with the vehicle (doesn't necessarily have to be heli, can be truck, blob etc) you will for a single moment return to the checkpoint (obviously since you restarted) but then you'll immediately be returned to the location the vehicle was initially placed.
Thirdly (and probably most importantly), any powerups that you collected in the space between the checkpoint and the vehicle you used the glitch at will be reset. for example. if you collect the checkpoint, then proceed to collect 17 stars and go through 6 teleporters before using the glitch at a helicopter. The glitch will happen like normal but all 17 stars will be uncollected and the 6 teleporters will be able to be reused. This is the fun part behind making the puzzles that I did because it involves strategically collecting powerups and using the glitch to reset teleporters and return through them with a vehicle that you didn't have access to before.
Here's a list of all the positive things that can be abused by using the glitch:
- Most notably the vehicle you used the glitch on will have double time. for example if it initially had 10 seconds on the timer it would have 20. this happens because the helicopter you used the glitch on is counted as one of the power ups that gets reset every time the glitch is used. so you're essentially collecting the same power up twice back to back.
- reusable teleporters
- being able to bring vehicle time to another location. For example if you collect a checkpoint while in a blob with 4.77 seconds left and proceed with the track as normal and have the time run out. Later in the track if you use the glitch on another blob with 15 seconds instead of returning you to the point with that you used the glitch like normal with a 30 second blob, it'll return you the checkpoint that you collected with the previous blob with but now with 19.77 seconds left on it, therefore allowing you go down previously unopen paths. (which was the objective in waterlife 4 except i forgot you could just use the double time feature of the glitch to skip the top-most area of the level lmao
Also this is how you know the glitch will work. The heli's greyed out because it's registered being collected but you still haven't become the helicopter yet. Holding down enter and unpausing from this position will successfully do the glitch and, in this image, reset the teleporter:

It sounds complicated and I guess it is a bit, but after messing around with the things you can make with it you'll get used to it.

https://www.freeriderhd.com/t/808550-water-life-4 - Could be exploited with Polygon's mod's variation of the vehicle glitch which allows you to get infinite time on a vehicle. I'm not sure if it's been patched. If it has this is the hardest vehicle glitch track I've currently got
Some final notes:
- In the track editor you can go back checkpoints while paused, you can't do that in-game so keep that in mind while making tracks with the glitch as the solution.
- Ghosts will, not always, but frequently break when using the glitch. So I can image grinding for a featured ghost while using this glitch would be difficult but not impossible.
- If you couldn't tell I really want more tracks with this sh.it because I think it's cool.
