hey! I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but in the case that it wasn't i decided that I would post in here. When I export the blank level one from the super mario editor (not FRHD editor addition, just the blank editor w/out riders) it adds a bunch of unnecessary powerups, and there might be more but I didn't see any more.

anyways not sure if there is much you can do about that but thought you might want to know. Also, zooming in on the editor edition (with the rider) is extremely janky, as it zooms in on my cursor, but then proceeds to realign with the rider in the center of the screen (as though i started riding right after).

the powerups thing happened because you chose my N Mario level and then chose Level 1 afterward, and all the powerups in N Mario stayed in the map. that's just a glitch from how the powerups are handled in the editor (they are meant to not change after being imported, so they can stay the same after exporting). I can see about fixing that.

in the FRHD editor with Mario Mode, when the camera is locked on the rider, it will lock to the horizontal position of the rider and the vertical center of the screen. the zoom acts a little funny because of that. but when you are drawing, the camera and zoom should work normally, and should zoom on your cursor. if it "proceeds to realign with the rider", I'm not sure what would be causing that, unless a directional key is being pressed (which would lock the camera to the rider again).

yeah it is continuing to be realigning with the rider, it's not acting quite like normal. I'm not sure why it's doing that, maybe I'll try restarting my computer or something.

did the zoom still realign with the rider after restarting?

I absolutely love that people are pioneering new ways of trackmaking, and giving new tools to use. However, I was just wondering if this would be frowned upon by certain people, because there seems to have been an opinion in the past that certain tools (like the fill tool pssst mentioned, which these copy and paste editors allow you to practically do) are bad for the game because they make trackmaking easier (therefore taking away from some of the tracks that were previously made with a tremendous amount of effort).

Obviously, considering that the guys pushing this are titans in the community, it seems clear that we are taking steps towards frequent use of these tools. With this in mind, I was just wondering if some of the people who are leaders in this arena (Ness and Calculus for making the editors, and Volund for pushing it in the Mario Contest) could give voice to the debate (make trackmaking easier for better tracks vs. keep trackmaking harder for more deserving tracks).

    would be happy to oblige!

me and Ness have spoken about this at length, and my opinion is that making trackmaking easier raises both the skill floor and skill ceiling of players. it opens the game up to a wider population of players, allowing for ppl to focus on creativity rather than learning how to mindlessly/tediously draw every blade of grass/leaf etc. but, at the same time, the best players will still be the best players, and will be able to leverage the tools in even more powerful ways than newer/worse players (indeed, i expect to see this being the case in the mario contest). i see parallels to the use of the dream machine to the use of chatgpt, where poor students will use it to write their assignments whilst high-achieving students will use it to brainstorm concepts, test their knowledge and enhance their own work. i think this is a huge positive all around; the best will still be the best, whilst less-skilled players with the drive to improve will be able to elevate their work to levels they'd be unable to reach without a far bigger time investment.

as you say, the dream machine has opened a can of worms, in that there are now a lot of options and opportunities for us as a community to make trackmaking easier/more accessible. myself and ness were even discussing the viability of making public 'assets' available in the dream machine, where everyone has access to a database of pre-drawn assets (ie a tree, ramps, bushes etc) to use in their tracks. there are ofc problems with this - such as who will make the assets - but it's really awesome the way that the dream machine has and will revolutionise trackmaking in a way that really hasnt been seen in a decade or so

i dont think anyone will have any problems with ppl using these tools to their advantage, though i would like to hear them if ppl do !

I think putting new tools into the hands of trackmakers is a positive thing. whether it be trackmaking tools like the brush tool or the curve tool (which are relatively new additions) or gameplay tools like the checkpoint and zero gravity powerups (also newer), there's a little bit of worry that the game loses some simplicity or a need for talent/skill/artistry. but like those additions, I don't think that's the case for these editors.

for example, the curve tool is a big help for newer members who want an easy way to make a smooth ramp. I'm a little old fashioned, so I don't personally use it to draw my ramps, but often I'll use the scenery curve to make the general shape of a ramp as a guide. I could complain that my ramp making skill is "devalued" by the skill floor being raised, but instead I just use the tool how it benefits me and keep making tracks.

I feel like the new editors are the same. a simple use of the Dream Machine is to just copy and paste an object, easy stuff. it'll make it easier for trackmakers to make tracks, which I think is a win for everybody. but to utilize that capability in a skilled and creative way, that'll be what sets apart great trackmakers from the rest. a quote that kinda predicted the future:

a side note: I know some people might not feel this way, but imo, being admired as "skillful" or "hardworking" isn't as important as making and playing fun and beautiful tracks. I made my dream machine track before I had these new editors, and I had started work on it in 2020. no circle tool, and just the original code mover for help. I got so caught up in the tedious logistical stuff, and the small amount of free time I had went to that instead of the fun creative parts. I think the effort means something, but it doesn't mean everything. I hope the editors free up time for trackmakers to be creative and enjoy the trackmaking process.

nowadays I can make a fun Mario level in a day or two and I enjoy making them and playing them just as much as my month long projects. there's always a place for classic trackmaking, but I think there's a place for these editors as well.

Dream machine awakened my love for sprites again, I'm yet to really test myself yet but I think the potential for this is truly limitless. Watch this space this weekend I'm going to see how far truly I can push the boundaries because this has allowed me to uphold scale, increase the colour potentials/shades.

added a circle tool to the FRHD editor! click the circle icon on the left toolbar to try it out.

on the bottom toolbar, the "Segment Ratio" slider increases or decreases the amount of lines in your circle.
