    IMPORTANT UPDATE - please read

    Contributors to the Contest:
Concept, Track Elements and Coding: Ness
Super Mario Maker Editor Coding: Calculus
Contest Hosting and Additional Help: Volund
Mario Mode uses coding from Polygon

Welcome to the most unique contest in the history of Free Rider, hosted by Volund and created by Ness with help from Calculus and Polygon!

Using the Super Mario Maker Editor developed by Ness and Calculus - which allows you to import objects into the editor that you can rotate, flip, and place anywhere in your track - you are tasked with creating the best Super Mario level possible! You will also have access to a modified version of the FRHD Track Editor that has the "Mario Mode" function, which lets you play your Mario track with horizontal scrolling, gives the player a Mario red or Luigi green cap, and turns some FRHD powerups into Super Mario items. These two tools are essential to this contest, and give players an opportunity to create a FRHD track that plays - and looks - less like a traditional track and more like a Super Mario level!

Access to the Super Mario Maker Editor can be found at this link: https://yxkpro.github.io/super-mario-maker-frhd/editor/
Access to the modded FRHD Track Editor with Mario Mode can be found at this link: https://yxkpro.github.io/super-mario-maker-frhd/

**If you have any questions regarding the Super Mario Maker Editor or the modded FRHD Track Editor, please direct questions to Ness and Volund on the forums or in this discord channel.**

    RULES:
    > You will have 6 weeks to make your entry, from 10:00pm July 11th 2023, to 11:59pm August 22nd 2023 (all in Australian Central Standard Time [ACST GMT+9:30])
ANYONE CAN JOIN THE CONTEST AT ANY POINT BETWEEN JULY 11 AND AUGUST 22
    > Late uploads allowed with a five (5) point deduction for each day late.
    > Your track must be drawn in the "Level 1" code that will be released on the Super Mario Maker on the 11th of July. Any entries not drawn in this code, will be disqualified. Please note that you can delete the starting pipe and text if you like, and you can edit the ground and box however you need. Also, know that the grey rectangle outlines the art that will be used as the game cartridge's art should you win a cartridge (it also is the outline for the thumbnail used by FRHD; I recommend that everyone does their very best work in this rectangle, and then you can delete the outline once finished.)
    > No tracing or other forms of cheating.
    > You must post a link to your track in this thread once finished.
    > Must comment 'In' or some variation in this thread to enter.

    PRIZES:
    > $100USD 1st place, $75USD 2nd place, $50USD 3rd place, with more prizes to be announced closer to the due date.
    > Depending on the number of entries, there will be medals for top 5
    > There will be a medal given to the 'Rising Star' of this contest

    JUDGES AND POINT SYSTEM:
    > Judging will by done myself and Ness
    > You will be scored by the below parameters:
    - x/10 for detail and art
    - x/10 for theme ("[scored on] whether you go for a traditional Mario platformer or make a new unique adventure, points for theme will be based on your use of Mario characters, settings, game mechanics, ideas, etc." - Ness)
    - x/10 for fun factor (Super Mario and Nintendo games are all about unbridled fun; get creative and give us a level that lives up to these standards!)

"I am confused about how to access, download or use the Super Mario Maker Editor or the modded FRHD Track Editor, but I really want to join in. What should I do?"
If - after you've read through the Dream Machine thread, the tutorial in the post below and this thread, and have tried the editors yourself - you are still confused about how to use or access one or both of these tools, please reach out to either myself (@/volund. on discord) or Ness (@yxkpro on discord) and ask for help! Alternatively, you can post questions on this thread for others to help, or send questions to the FRHD Official Discord in this channel *here*.

Comment 'in' below if you're in, and good luck to all who enter!

Tutorial on how to use Super Mario Maker and other new editors:
    Tutorial (open)

    1. Select a level – when the contest begins, there will be a "Level 1" option, and that will be the starting code for your track. there is also a "Custom level" option that allows you paste in a trackcode. to import a trackcode from a file, use the "Import" button at the top right. the level is not affected by the eraser.

    2. Select an object – use the default objects, or use “Custom” to paste in your own object. to make custom objects, draw something in the FRHD editor and use that trackcode.

    3. Edit your object – use the keyboard shortcuts below to rotate and flip your objects. (you can also scale your objects in the Dream Machine editor)

    4. Place an object – choose the spot you want to place the objects with your cursor and left click to place it. you can also use ctrl + left click to more precisely place the object off the grid. (you can also hold right click to use the object brush in the Sandman editor)

    5. Erase an object – choose the Eraser button and left click to erase the full object, or use ctrl + left click to erase individual lines from the object. resize your eraser with the mouse wheel or "+" and "-".

    6. Move your camera – you can use shift + left click and drag to move the camera, shift and "+" to zoom in, shift and "-" to zoom out

    6. Export the track – click "Export" in the top-right corner to save your track with your objects added! and you can put that code into the FRHD editor to play and draw.

here are some keyboard shortcuts for editing your objects:

    "R" - rotates object clockwise
    shift + "R" - rotates object counter-clockwise

    "F" - flips object horizontally
    shift + "F" - flips object vertically

left click with object - place object
ctrl + left click with object - place objects off the grid / more precisely

left click with eraser - erase placed objects
ctrl + left click with eraser - erase lines from placed objects

shift + left click and drag to move camera
    shift + "+" - zoom in
    shift + "-" - zoom out

    Dream Machine exclusive shortcuts:

    "S" - increase object size
    shift + "S" - decrease object size

ctrl + "R" - does more gradual rotation
ctrl + "S" - does more gradual scaling

    Sandman exclusive shortcuts:

right click with object - place object as a brush
ctrl + right click with object - place objects as a brush off the grid / more precisely

    notes:

if you use the "Custom level" option or the "Import" option, power-ups in that trackcode will not show up in this editor, but will still be in your exported code. power-ups in a "Custom" object will not be saved.

the eraser only effects objects inserted in your current session, and does not effect levels or previously inserted objects.

if you import a custom item and then use the eraser, when you press the "Custom" object button again, select "Cancel" and your item will reappear.

Super Mario Maker note - holding ctrl while pressing export will add a smaller version of your level to the right of your original level. this can be used to simulate a mushroom powerup by placing teleports between the two sizes of your track, but this is tricky to do well.

Sandman note - the grid size matches the height and width of your object, so your objects will tile correctly. and the editor automatically removes duplicated/overlapping lines of your placed objects, so no worries about double lines.

if you guys have any more questions, feel free to ask them in this thread or in the discord.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    Q. Are we only able to use the Super Mario Maker editor and nothing else to make our track?

You can use the normal FRHD editor to make your track. Using the extra tools that are available (the Super Mario Maker editor, Dream Machine editor, and Sandman editor) is not a requirement of the contest, but it is recommended to try them out and see if you could benefit from using them.

    Q. What is Mario Mode?

The FRHD editor with Mario Mode is a modded version of the FRHD editor that enables horizontal scrolling (and also adds colored hats and Mario stars). The horizontal scrolling locks the camera to the horizontal position of the rider and to the vertical center of the screen (which is the starting point of the rider and the center of the box, and is not changed by teleports or checkpoints). When the tracks are being played by the judges, Mario Mode will be used. Here's a video showing how your track will be played (the zoom might be different on different screens, but it'll be lined up as close to the borders as possible):

    Q. Am I allowed to edit the starting "Level 1" code? Can I draw outside of it?

Yes, you can edit the starting code. You can delete the starting pipe and text if you like, and you can edit the ground and box however you need. You can extend or shorten the length of the box. You can also draw above and below the box, but this is an important part of the contest: the tracks will be judged while playing with Mario Mode, with the camera zoomed in to match the top and bottom borders of the box. This means that the area above and below the box will not be visible when the track is being played. If you want a part of your track to be seen, keep it between the top and bottom borders of the box, but drawing above and below the box is allowed.

    Q. What is the grey rectangle at the start?

The grey rectangle at the beginning outlines the art that will be used as the game cartridge's art (it also is the outline for the thumbnail used by FRHD; I recommend that everyone does their very best work in this rectangle, and then you can delete the outline once finished).

and to be clear, you aren't limited to the default objects in the editor! and you can use the Dream Machine and Sandman editors as well. use any tool at your disposal to make the best Mario track, or even just use the normal editor if you'd prefer. but keep in mind, when the entries are judged, they will be played with the Mario Mode horizontal scrolling.

feel free to try the attached track in the FRHD editor with Mario Mode to see what a track might play like, or in the Super Mario Maker Editor to test out adding objects! I'm really excited to see what cool tracks could come out of this!

here's a full tutorial on how to use the editors! it is not a requirement of the contest that you have to use these extra tools, but there are lots of cool features in these editors that can help you make a track.
how to use the editor (open)

Bro Greenwich Mean Time is only valid in the winter. It's BST currently, UTC is probably the time you want to use.

trust me, this was posted from Greenwich.

this is just a normal trackmaking contest with a Mario theme and extra tools that you can use. you can make your track however you want. the only rules about how to build your track are that you have to build it with the starting code that will be posted on July 11th, and no tracing. but other than that, best track wins. and keep in mind, the tracks will be played with horizontal scrolling when we do the judging.

Just like actual mario maker, make a level so incredibly hard, it might take you 7 years to beat.
