I don't think it's that hard. It's an optional thing mostly for fun. For each 10 rounds, you get 2 challenge requests. You don't have to use them at any point, but you can use it to try to gain more points, avoid facing a certain player or whatever tactic you are planning. You can only challenge people in the same rank and the ranks above you. Players challenged have to accept the challenges, unless they are on a break.
For example, I'm on the Gold rank, so I can challenge players from the Gold, Platinum and Diamond rank at the moment. Let's see how it can go: I have 1374 points and challenged CHARREDLIZARD21 this week, that has 1328 points. Using the
ELO Calculator to calculate the scores (that's what we use, having the K set as 100), I would gain 43.4 points (that would be rounded down to 43) in case of win in a standard scenario, with random matchups. Since it's a challenge with players from the same rank, 10 more points are added to that amount. So if I win next week I'll gain 53 points and CHARREDLIZARD21 will lose 53 points. Using the same calculator, since CHARREDLIZARD21 has less points than me, he would win 56.6 points (that would be rounded up to 57) in case of win in a standard scenario, but he will win 67 points since it's a challenge, if he wins. I would lose 67 points in that case.
So why use challenges then? Yeah, I can lose more points than usual if I lose, but if I win I will gain more points than usual as well, so that should be a calculated risk. For example, since RedOrBlue is the only one in the Diamond rank, if no one challenges him he'll be forced to be on a match with the top player in the rank below, DrChill. If DrChill faces RedOrBlue, Cerasium will be the only one left on the Platinum rank, so he would be forced to face the top player in the rank below, also known as me. So this is the kind of tactics you can use on certain scenarios. CHARREDLIZARD21 is for sure killing it in the contest, with a great win streak, but if there's no challenges between the top 4 players I would have to face Cerasium, which will probably happen eventually, but I'm not that eager to do it now, haha. Especially with college coming back from me, which makes me having less time to ghost.
With this challenge I made, I'll be out of challenges until when the challenges get reseted in week 21, but I think it might be a good move for this round.
Also, each player can be challenged 5 times for each 20 weeks, so that you can't become the only target for the players.
You can also use challenges to try to climb up the ranks quickly. For example, challenges from the same rank and 1 rank apart only give 10 additional points, but if you make challenges against someone many ranks above you and win, the bonuses can be bigger and there's 2 reasons for that:
1 - To value this big upset - If someone from Wood rank challenges RedOrBlue and wins, they will get other than the actual score earned (close to 100 points) an additional 35 points bonus (for being 5 ranks apart). Something like that is a rare thing to see, but if someone from a lower rank think they can pull this off, they are free to do it.
2 - To give some punctuaction to the challenged as well. Like, if the last place faced RedOrBlue, the actual score would be rounded down to 0, but with the challenge factor, he would get those 35 points for the wins at least.
But to keep it short, challenges are meant to be used as an optional tactical advantage to either gain more points or maybe avoid certain matches or try to get some benefits in the next week's round. I hope you get the idea.
