s/o to spruce and pssst for having some very based takes, i dont have much else to say on the topic other than reiterating that the best and most memorable tracks have impeccable/well-implemented rides (magnum opus is infinitely more replay-able than the super mario campaign track, for example). in the case of malicia, going the route of generation by Tremulant or StevenLeary will always be better than their most recent track, imo. also, braw and Innominate were robbed of features, possibly due to unconscious feature fatigue, but i'll have more on this in the rankings post

oh yeah, me and eryp are just finishing off CC for the placements, then will be released. probably done in the next 24 hours or so ! judging has been difficult, but we have a winner...

What's interesting to me is how different people view the format of art and games.

Different styles of games exist for a reason. I've always enjoyed a good story, minute details and gameplay doesn't always need to be the most compelling. Heck I could do something monotonous for 1000s of hours and not even get much gameplay out of it and it's still entertaining.

What matters is as long as someone enjoyed that medium, it's done the right thing.

pssst you're crazy but at least you let yourself be different

At the end of the day I'm not gonna end up winning or even placing remotely high. mostly likely I'd place myself low top 10, anywhere from 8-10th.
But I also just want to thank Volund for organizing the most successful contest since remix contest 8 over three years ago, and making a contest with a great and easy to understand theme that really lets people be creative. It was a huge amount of fun to draw for the few days I had to work on it.

Also this opinion goes almost as hard as my entry lmao.
P.S. zwinxz would've swept if he had time. just sayin lol.

    Good point
To say that freerider's purpose is to publish tracks for its visual interest and nothing else is to misunderstand the concept of the game entirely. Freerider was intended to incorporate track making AND art, and in my opinion I think the games appeal is not determined on either aspect of it at all but both. I like admiring art by itself and ngl I'm not a great ghoster so I don't get the thrill of getting the fastest time on a track, but that isnt to say I still don't enjoy riding a compelling track while admiring the detail that surrounds it.
Take the City of Omashu, looking at ghosters beat an engaging track ride alongside appreciating Wyatts detail is I think a perfect example of what freeriders about. Then again, people tend to lean in one side of each aspect of the game than others and I dont blame them, some are attracted to a specific feature of the game while others appreciate either aspect equally.
Still, I'd say a track that balances both trackmaking and detail have 'perfectly' achieved the purpose of frhd, but it doesnt mean that a track that leans into one side more has a track that doesnt deserve praise

Everyone has their own preferences in regards to the ratio of gameplay to visual, in addition to what kind of gameplay and what kind of visual. Reading through the discussion myself I was reminded exactly that. If you were to try categorizing this ratio to all tracks, you'd prob end up w/ a spectrum; have tracks that heavily lean either way and you have some right in the middle. I imagine people make things that they enjoy, and if they don't enjoy it they prob aren't going to do as good of a job if they did or stick around much longer. So looking at people's works you really get a sense of what everyone values and finds appealing. I'm kind of ignoring the practical aspects like the game's limitations and people's limitations.

One of the things I like about FR is the players are really deciding and influencing what gets produced. Just like this contest by Volund: looking at the scoring criteria and the theme it'll produce tracks that lean more towards visuals and have pokemon. With the remix contest from weem, it'll likely promote a more balanced ratio based on the judging criteria. And when it comes to individual creators you really have to make the type of tracks that you like and want to see from others. Taking my own example: the kinds of rides I usually enjoy are found in the Pathway tracks, I made them for myself to play b/c I felt there wasn't enough of them on the database. I also like pretty tracks that have substantial rides, but I understand it can be a huge endeavor so I'm willing to give advice and encouragement in hopes to see more stuff like it. I can't expect people to shift whatever they enjoy doing to cater to my preferences. But by making what it is you enjoy you can set an example of what can be done and what can be enjoyable and very well can potentially influence the future stuff that others make.

I’m not going to go too in-depth on this, as it is unfinished, but the shading on the Chandelure is sick. I really hope you finish this down the track, as this is an excellent start. Keep on grinding this out, and you could find yourself with a feature!

You clearly know how to draw, but lack the drive to do so seriously in FRHD, which honestly is based. Your shaping and understanding of shading is obvious, particularly in the Piplup and Pikachu! The ride is whatever, just a heli track, and beyond the cute Piplup the track in general is whatever. Make a proper track ffs!!!

First off, really neat card; the gear and wire design in the background really reminds me of old 2000s cards, where a Pokemon would be on a plain background consisting of what they’re made after. This track shows me that you have a lot of great ideas, it’s just nailing the execution, which you’ll achieve through practice. The mechanic arm, some of the gears, the shading of the steel beam - all really well drawn. However, there’s a lot here which needed to be re-drawn due to problems with shaping. The Klang itself is out of proportion, a lot of the gears suffer the same problem, and the single-line wires are just spammy, and detract more than they add. Perhaps it was a time issue - as this was uploaded late - but with more time and care, you clearly had a great entry on your hands.
The ride was really fun on my first playthrough, but upon 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc attempts, I realised I got quite lucky with the RNG sections of this track. You cover for this well with liberal amounts of checkpoints, but the sections especially where the rider had to be kept in place with rails needed refining. However, this is still a great entry; with better managing of time and further refinement, you would’ve been in the running for the Rising Star Award. Keep at it - it’s only up from here!

What a massive step up in quality in comparison to your previous tracks! Your foliage, houses and Pokemon are all really cute; you draw in a very charming fashion. I think your trees and cliffs need a lot of work, but otherwise I think with some more general improvements you’re not far from a feature. I highly encourage you to look through the detailing compendium on the forums, and to keep at it; you’ve got a featured track in you for sure. I scored you down on the Pokemon implementation and creativity section, as I’m still not sure which Pokemon is meant to be your focus.
I can tell you put in a lot of effort into your ride, which is admirable, but I think you tried to do too much with it without making it interesting. What I mean by this, is the part where you teleport back to almost the start of the track, turn into a blob for the second time, and replay most of the track all over again. This is track recycling at its most boring; avoid doing this if possible! Otherwise, the ride was passable - all in all, a great effort!

A very cool entry! This looks a lot like a classic Pokemon card, with the Charizard front and centre upon a platform with a nice background. Given your previous tracks, this is a great improvement on your detail skills; the clouds in particular are beautiful! Your structures and cliffs need some work, mainly in terms of connecting your lines (use straight line tool!!) and understanding shapes better, but nonetheless this is a great effort! Your ride was great until the cave section, which not only went beyond the card’s code but also was pretty average. Otherwise, this is a neat entry - I hope to see more tracks from you in the future!

Another one robbed of a feature; there are problems with your detail here, which I will expand on below, but people are being unfairly harsh with their criticism. You have a lot to be proud of here!
The clouds are really cool, portraying choppy wind and storminess really well. That being said, I think less would’ve been more here; some of the shapes of your clouds are amazing whilst others are comparatively sloppy, and I think letting the best ones shine would’ve greatly benefitted the track. I feel this way with the grass as well. The mountain in the background is really well done, as are the palm trees, but my favourite part of the track is the lake - zoomed in, it looks so serene. However, the little stream in the foreground needed to either be omitted or worked on more, as the water source just appears from nowhere; as well as this, the little puddle thing the stream ends in is barely distinguishable from the grass around it. Again, less is sometimes more. Rayquaza is well positioned on the card, but I think could have benefited greatly from bolder shading and better shaping. The ride was well-implemented, and quite fun - until you try and hit the last helicopter by flipping off the tree. It’s just far too unreliable and kills ghosts right at the very end, which is incredibly frustrating. This being said, this is a great entry, though the late deduction really tanked your score. I hope you continue to draw and refine your style - Cynic had similar critiques when he first started drawing, and look at his work now! You have the same potential.

I didn’t know that it was possible to be both impressed and disappointed simultaneously, but here we are. First, the Mega Swampert and Mega Blaziken; just so well done. The proportions, shaping, shading and their facial expressions are all done incredibly well. I’m not sure how you managed to put them in a meme/game of basketball without them looking stupid or out of place, but you have. All this being said, the rest of the track is immensely disappointing. The crowd is just… yeah. And the flashes from cameras aren’t even in the crowd, wtf is with that?? They look great, as do the floodlights, but why are they floating above the crowd??
The ride sucks ass, I’m sorry but it’s true. But the Pokemon are fantastically drawn, so at least there’s that! With a proper background and ride, this would’ve scored a lot higher.

Tbh, you were robbed of a feature here. I can see why it was overlooked, but as a first feature this is better than most people’s first features. Here’s why:
Drawing waves is ******* hard, but you nailed it. So is drawing scenes in icy biomes, but again, you nailed it; the use of whites and greys makes so much sense, and especially zoomed out, you can tell it’s an icy ocean. The hatching you’ve used is really neat, although perhaps a tad overused; I think having a starry night sky would’ve looked better than the awkward-looking horizontal lines in the sky, but I am the resident star spammer of FRHD ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the clouds and rocks are gorgeous, and the style in which you drew Kyurem really reminds me of that classic Gen 5 pixelated art style, just incredibly well-done. However, I do think Kyurem needed to be bigger and/or bolder here, like how dante and Coager used double lines on their Pokemon to really make them pop. That being said, I know you restarted with only a couple weeks or so left of the contest, so a great effort considering that.
The ride is quite fun, but the balloon part did sour it. Needing to park it in front of the teleporter for a couple of seconds is tedious, and often resulted in ruining my ghost. Perhaps a shorter time on the Balloon powerup or different placement of the teleporter would have worked better here? Nonetheless, this is a great entry, that with more time could’ve broken into the top 8, maybe even top 5. Keep at it, you’ve got a clean style here; keep developing this!

This track is just so cool, the simplicity belies the creativity of the track. The kanji is beautifully drawn, and the energy costs are just sublime - I don’t know how you’ve managed to draw circles so perfectly! The Pokeball’s you’ve made in the corner with the bomb is so genius as well, such a neat little addition to the track. The general concept of the card reminds me of mid-late 2000s Pokemon cards that would have flipping gimmicks, and doing it with Plusle and Minun is perfect! They’re also drawn in such an adorable fashion, and with such crisp lines too.
The ride is a heap of fun, and although I’m yet to make it even to the first star, I’m determined to do so - I’ve probably sunk a good hour into trying so far! Someone in the comments described the ride as a puzzle, and that’s definitely the vibe I get from playing. For a last minute entry, this track is awesome; hopefully one day I can finish it!
