    I have no problem either way, I just feel as if people are being jipped because they just spent a fudge load of time on a track and they can't even prove that they beat it on their profile or "show" that it's beatable

    Yeah I agree, it should at least show in some way that the person beat it, even if the ghost won't save

    Yeah I agree. I think it should be an option that you could turn on or off when clicking on a ghost. Maybe it should be standard if the ghost is over 15 minutes, because when that happens the ghost doesn't save, so cutting the deaths out of it should change that

    Well it can't be optional if one of the two option doesn't work, ghosts over ~15 minutes don't save, so cutting the time down by removing the deaths is the only option there. (If it even is a solution, I need Char on that)

    Ghosts over 15 minutes don't save because Char and Eric didn't yet write the code for that. Wait until they do, eh?

    I'm pretty sure they said it's too big for the server too. Anyway I legitimately think what me and Max has suggested in the last couple hours are clearly the most logical and intelligent ideas and thought processes.

    Um, if they'd used Amazon's AWS server hosting, there would be no problems at all!

    We use amazon.

    The size of the replay is set due to a couple things.
    - Saving data costs money
    - No one is going to watch a 30 minute replay

    I might eventually have to create a new version of the replay string to reduce size. Currently replay strings are not optimized.


    And the checkpoint discussion lives on.

    Pros of no death checkpoints
    • Shorter replay strings
    • Better looking replays
    • Shorter times.
    • Less rage quitting

    Cons of no death checkpoints
    • Cheating
    • Less skill distribution
    • We would have to break all replays with checkpoints currently, (Or I would have to stub in legacy code

    Ultimately if it were up to me, I would like a 'Braid' style system, where you can rewind to any point. Allowing you to perfect a run. I think the main issue is that we don't want to break all the replays we currently have, and are 'scared' that if we put in a system that allows runs to be perfected, we take out the racing aspect of the game.
    On one hand, it could increase engagement and time on site (by reducing rage quit) , but on the other hand it could potentially limit us in some way.

    Are you challenging me to watch 30 minute replays? because I'll happily watch a 30 minute replay.

    Char, Hey, u can make a "ghost code" similar to track code, then a ghost is simply permalink url of "ghost code" also because url is plain text compression will make it like as if it was only a few bytes in size! Compression is THE BEST for plaintext files, Don't you already know that!?

    Yeah I get all of this and I'm not suggesting the checkpoint system to be changed. I think everything should stay the way it is, but I think that there should be an option to show a replay without the deaths, so that you could see how a track is supposed to be beaten. For example I got a short trial track and I want to see how the third obstacle is beaten, but the best replay dies about a hundred times untill he gets to that obstacle and I don't want to see all of that, cutting the deaths out of the replay would really help me. The original time it took to complete the track would still appear next to the ghost, but this no death thing is only for checking out the replay and is optional, just so that you can check longer ghosts without having to see through all the deaths. It could also make it possible to check out replays over 30 minutes if you save the replay without the deaths if it would be too long for normal saving.
    I don't really like the braid thing btw, I think it would really limit the racing part of this game, which you guys have been really advertising from the start and focussing on.

    I think it is not important to show any rider how a track is supposed to be beaten unless you require a track creator to show it by creating a ghost when a track is published. The first person to beat any track doesn't get the luxury, why should any of his/her competitors get the luxury to be "shown" how to beat a track perfectly?

    Any track creator should technically create tracks that are clever enough to challenge rider's skills but not make it unbeatable. Perhaps a team of the best and most trusted riders should be able to evaluate tracks and give them a difficulty rating or report them as unbeatable to reduce frustration of newer riders. There are already trusted track creators.

    Technically, an unbeatable track is a one where even the track's creator cannot finish it, and if he cannot finish it, it cannot be posted on frhd, therefore, it is impossible, to create objectively unbeatable tracks on frhd, unless you're an official author! :cool:
