Painting is just wildly different. Someone that dedicates their life to charcoal drawing might have a great understanding of fleshing out shapes and of values, but have no understanding of color theory or anything like that. It’s just an entirely different area of art. Being good at one thing might help the other, but you’re not going to be automatically good at one because of the other. For example, an amazing runner might have more stamina on the bike, or better lung capacity, but have little to no technical or downhill skills, and will be very slow. Or vice versa. It’s akin to comparing apples and oranges

Sorry if i bothered anyone, but i'm trying to get better at detailing, i red the entire compendium and searched thru many pages of this thread, and i'm doing well (know how to draw decent rocks, trees, use reference pics etc)

But i'm struggling to find a tutorial and to detail/shade small flat rocks like the ones in the pic below, as they have few bumps, being small makes it annoying to perfect (the same happens to tree tops )

      rocks.png

      Can anyone help me?

      Thanks for reading! :)

ignore the lack of detail on the island

the shape looks great but if you want it to look like its on a hill erase the lines on the bottom so it looks like it is part of the hill, also make it look 3d by adding a line along the top to simulate a 3d look.

hi ! i thought it could be interesting to discuss different settings people use in the editor, and why they use a particular set up. it's a topic that's come up briefly every now and again with a variety of players of varying skill level, so i think it could both be interesting and helpful to discuss pros and cons of different set ups

this is how i've drawn in the editor since it was updated all those years ago (lol):
      > camera lock: on
reasoning: i draw at around 600%-800% zoom for the majority of the time, as it gives me the most amount of control when drawing. as such, i need the screen to be stable when zoomed in so much. i dont like moving the screen unless i have finished drawing in a particular section, so that i have a feel for whether i need to redo my drawing or not. it also feels more like drawing on paper, so it's a little more natural-feeling to me
      > brush length: lowest possible setting // brush trail speed: highest possible setting
reasoning: admittedly i dont use brush very much anymore, if at all really. but when i do/did, i found these settings to be most optimal and comfortable for drawing brush-y stuff like leaves, clouds etc. with that being said, i think having brush trail speed at the lowest possible setting gives the player a lot more control and better results. the problem is having the patience for it. note that i've never used a drawing pad etc, i imagine this setting will be highly different depending on whether you use a mouse or not
      > right click camera move: on
reasoning: ease of use more than anything else. means that i can draw and erase without having to click the camera setting every so often
      > grid size: 5
when using grid to draw architecture, size 5 is simply the best. it gives you a lot more opportunity to draw interesting, symmetrical and even shapes than in size 10. i dont bother with size 2 as i find the drawing crosshair is way too big for the tiny grid squares, and i occasionally use higher sizes to count out areas for map size
      > polygon's mod: everything unchecked
i use polygon's mod when drawing for one sole reason; holding control and shift snaps the lines to be perfectly straight, and counts for you how long your lines are. this has been a life saver when drawing architecture, i used to count pixels and grid squares where now i have the software do it for me :' ) highly recommend installing for this feature alone, let alone everything else. the accurate eraser setting could be worthwhile testing, but i havent felt the need to thus far
so yeah, this is more or less how my editor has been set up for ~8 years ! feel free to post your own settings and why you have them the way you do, or ask other people how they set up the editor. even though there is not heaps of room for custom settings in the editor, ive found that everyone has their own quirks in one way or another. perhaps reading people's reasoning for certain settings, will help someone improve how they draw a particular way

i haven’t made a track in 2 years but i do have a new track cause i missed y’all, for that i used lowest brush length with trail speed at the lowest, i have camera lock on just to make it easier to draw. i don’t use grid even for architecture just because i feel it makes things more natural if that makes sense. i’ve been playing for 7 years minus the 2 year break. so only like 5

That's a pretty vague question, if you don't mind my saying. It looks right now like those dips on the side and your grass style are based off of Fluffysmack's drawing tutorial? So maybe take some inspiration from his trees, if that's what you mean.

i mean like how to draw it in the same way as the greenery, not make it look cartoony

Ahh, okay. So then...depends on what type of tree (deciduous vs. evergreen)
If you want realistic evergreens and also have loads and loads of time on your hands I would recommend checking out someone like Lolz666, or maybe Netsik if you want less busy trees. I also have a method that I use to draw evergreens, but it can be really time consuming or look messy, especially for larger trees.
As for deciduous trees...I don't really know, maybe Braw, since you said that you wanted the trees to look like the rest of the greenery? People like Cynic and Crypt have really detailed trees, but I wouldn't recommend trying to replicate that...

literally just find a tree that you like and copy the structure. There's nothing wrong with that. Make changes where you want them, like I made less lower branches and extended the bottom. Once you have the structure I like to draw in my own style and stop copying it.

If you're trying to draw twists it's gonna be really difficult without adding a 3D aspect. It's hard to balance tapering branches as they get closer and farrther away. Just try your best and let things overlap. Good luck!
