How do you younger folks view college/secondary ed with the fears of AI replacement in the near future?

 

I’m starting school in august to get my a and p, which is basically an aircraft mechanic license. I think prices are (still) ridiculous but I took a gap year out of high school to save and figure out what I wanted. I shouldn’t have to take out any loans so that’s nice I guess. I know AI will never be trusted to fly planes that carry a hundred + passengers, much less fix them so I have security in that. Any questions for me?

 

people call me crazy but imo we should shut AI down as fast as possible

 

I mean it has utility potential but we need to find a way to make it non self aware

 

There's no certain way to do anything like that. We have no idea how self aware it is, if at all. What I do know is that AI is learning things that it's not coded for, and different "bots" are teaching each other things! We have little control over what happens, and that's the issue.

 

I mean yeah, the military put ai in a drone and it crashed into the control tower after 1 minute

 

The military has AI weapons, missiles, that are programmed to go where it deems fit. What happens when it deems fit against us, or in a way that doesn't make sense to us. If it becomes self aware, instead of just a program made for the best case scenario (if you understand what I'm saying) we get into very dangerous territory, like you said.

hey all; here's a reminder to be nice to people: you don't know what they're going through right now and a bit of kindness makes the world go 'round

 

I completely disagree, "AI" is cool in all, but nowhere near a real threat.
at this point ChatGPT is essentially just a really advanced predictive text machine, it doesn't understand anything you say really.
for example ask it to do a large multiplication, it will just guess the right answer by placing the correct numbers in the front and back.

And even if AI does actually does develop some type of intelligence, it would be super useful. I see no downsides, humans will always have complete control

 

It’s teaching itself things that we haven’t programmed it to know, and different sources of AI have communicated with each other, something that we have not wanted to happen. Do I believe that there is sentience, or even sapience going on here? No. I don’t claim to be an expert, but this is just the beginning and I believe we’re getting ourselves into a bigger mess than we can control. We’re using it for military weapons, and so on, and I’m just saying that if we don’t understand it, we won’t be afraid of it. But if something happened to make us afraid, it will be something bad. And I don’t think that’s a risk I want to take.

goofy ahh flashbacks from this time last year, when I was sitting on a roof and I wrote a ton of stuff for this thread. I never really expected anyone to help me, I was just so lonely that I tended to overshare a lot and I just wanted people to see me. I didn't/don't have friends really, and I don't know what to do about that. I'm sorry guys.

 

from a not completely "so tired im practically drunk" point of view, I think that my fear isn't necessarily in replacement, although competing with AI is only going to get harder, it's with the declining creativity of humanity as a whole. If AI produces images, and voices, and ideas, and everything for us, we won't be fueled in the same way, and won't value the things we have. It's not a fear as much of a sadness. I don't see very much hope for a happy future for future generations. Hell, I don't see a happy future for even me.

 

I just felt the pain of losing hours of work on a track.... man...
