Try and have it all connect to something rather than float there; your track will look even better.

Like, this is the problem with this community. Some people get too up in arms about all of this bs about "copying styles" that this kind of stuff just stirrs up petty drama about nothing. The same freaking thing happened when spruce went under fire by CityShep and it is all total bs meant to stir the pot. Like YES a person may have a similar type of style and yes may have even been traced or something. The thing is, it's like all of these dudes think they can trademark art or something, like a certain style or whatever belongs to them. Like shut up, I mean, how many times can you redesign a rock. A R O C K. You know, the thing that has been detailed in THOUSANDS of tracks. Speaking of which, there are so, so many tracks out there across multiple free riders and multiple clones of free rider, that it is a whole lot harder to be original. Look I get it, featured tracks, you know the best of the best, may stand out in this department hence why they may get featured on the website. This is a silly discussion I mean people should make whatever they please and not get such dumb backlash for it. Can't we all just get the heck along?

Okay :). Good luck on changing up the detail a bit .

I do stand by what I said though but I do want to clarify a few things about my post. First off, the post was not an attack on weem but just all the people in general who do this type of thing. And in my original post I should not have said the whole elitist bs that I brought up and laying the blame all on them, and I apologise for such a childish remark. And I am also not saying that everybody should go out there and trace, that is not what I am saying. That would make the art side of the platform of FRHD a lot less unique and less truly amazing tracks would come out. However, I believe that perhaps tracing (at least in this sort of context) is okay and can be a good learning tool to further your own knowledge about detailing. Detailing in tracks on FRHD can be a long process and if you have no previous art skill, tracing can be a way to learn about how you can detail your own tracks as a sort of practice mechanic. As I see it, immitation is the sincirest form of flattery. Obviously, this means that whoever you copy is someone that you want to aspire to be like. After a while once you have learned enough about how to detail well, you can start to trace less and develop your own style more, the better your tracks will be and the more connected you will feel toward your creation. And in the example that weem shown, it doesn't seem like you fully 100% traced everything, which is good, keep experimenting with what you feel may look right to you.

Now discussing the "ethics" I guess you can say, about tracing. I would have more of a problem with all of this if, the person you are copying from is physically/financially affected by the actions, you are doing it for the sole purpose of financil benefit, you are doing this to purposefully attack or steal the fame from the original artist, to a lesser extent, for a contest entry I guess. Since none of those imply in this scenereo, I don't think what Figured was doing was in any way, shape, or form wrong. Now I would love to see artistic evolvement in this community, growing out of habits of tracing and such and finding your own skills in drawing. The thing is that I just don't want toxicity in the community becuase someone did something similar to another person, and then said person being harassed and being driven out of the community for it. That is not okay IMO.

I've never gotten this whole bias against tracing tbh. When I was small, I always used to trace, it was so much fun. Generally, if you're tracing, you shouldn't publish the track however. Tracing is in my opinion one of the best ways to learn art, just like how copying a novel will give you an idea of the spelling or general style, or performing/arranging/transcribing music expands your repertoire considerably, as you are literally imitating the various styles and techniques used in masterpieces, which you can then remix and use in your own work. It wouldn't be ok to trace an artwork and publish it as your own, even if you credited the original artist, as that would be basically plagiarising, and likely get a lot of positive rating for something you never did. To a certain extent, it can be accepted, but if you're copying vast swathes of something, then that's not on. Inspiration is alright, but you can only go so far.

Watching and trying to replicate what the professionals do is pretty much the most effective way of learning almost any skill. But the emphasis is on learning. I guess you can upload tracks of your learning process, everybody's doing it and feedback helps you improve. But I think it's wrong to have parts that are blatantly copied from other people in your "final product". For example a full-sized track that you're begging to get featured. But what is blatantly copying is subjective though and I don't have anything smart to say to that.

I would agree that one if they were to post such a track, they shouldn't ask for a feature when it uses resources from too many sources (too many is subjective ofc). But we should still be at least accepting of other peoples work and perhaps give them tips on how to improve and find their own way to branch out.

Yes there's always a better alternative than saying "lol CityShep copy trash". So bringing up copying in constructive critisism isn't always bad, but in this community it's often(?) handled poorly.

honestly if ppl were better at copying I’d be fine with it. wm prolly feels the same way.

We just see shtty attempts to replicate notable tracks. The fact that wm could point to a specific rock from spruce means something. Its a bad look. After looking at the WIP photo, the rock wasnt even the only item copied.

also, u CAN in fact design a rock in infinite ways.

Other than one comment pointing it out, nobody cares. Theres no “backlash”. Go and post ur track.

I guess the only reason anyone would care if u copied, is if they try to milk likes off of a shtty copy of ur hard work. I’ve had a few of my autos reposted, and it sucks.

Not really sure why u care at all tbh, u’ve never done detail

I agree u can practice in this way, just dont post ur sht. EZ

imitation is flattery? Until u have the opinion of the original creator, dont assume ur flattering them.

anyway this is getting kind of out of hand. I think we should either move this convo somewhere else or just drop it. We are off the WIP topic just a bit. (my thoughts are in the quote)

inspiration is not the same as copying. Acting on inspiration means you put a twist on a common subject material. Copying is replicating the subject matter in the same manner as the original.

For example the dinosaur in East Concord takes a lot of inspiration from maple’s dragon in Calamity.

The thing that “u can only draw rocks so many ways” is just plain wrong. rocks have no fixed shape. When u see 2 rocks with the same shape and contour, its never by coincidence.
