Confused how the community rates tracks here.

Hi, I'm Bitlion, or Bluemockingbird from my older days. I play FRHD.

I'm not new to FR2, I've followed this game since the Trackmill days (if anybody knows BlueMockingBird from there, that's me) and I've been a devout player of Canvas Rider as well before it was discontinued.

I know that Free Rider HD and Canvas Rider are both HTML5 based, which means that tracks with detail don't lag. Yet I am confused when I visit one of my favorite trackmaker's profiles, Honza47. Yet a lot of his detailed MTB tracks, despite intricate and beautiful detail, Silent Valley and Windy Hill, for example, all have less than 3 stars, while many random tracks I play with hardly any detail and a boring track progression have 4 votes with 5 stars.

I think the system where finishing a track by achieving all the stars gives you points, is shoving the meta of what people think are the "good" tracks into smooth, sparsely detailed, easy, monotonous tracks for their practicality in earning "points" by completing the track.

    hello and welcome!

i don't believe the way people were rating has changed since we added points (i could dig into Honza47's tracks to verify but most likely majority of votes came pre points) although the tracks do look beautiful etc, it is likely the difficulty that the tracks are getting rated down on.

What could help this is a different rating system but that would add in additional complexity and likely decrease the likelihood players would vote. One thing that may help is giving track authors the ability to set difficulty level, if you go into a track expecting it to be "Difficult" you will likely not spend 10 minutes in frustration trying to beat it and then leave giving it a downvote.

    Any other ideas?

Hi, thanks for the welcome post!
I like the difficulty idea. People who prefer to play easier, more casual smooth tracks can play elsewhere expecting what they would like.

However I still think the rating system should go to a thumbs-up and thumbs-down type system. People who wouldn't want to spend as much time viewing a track wouldn't go through the trouble of thinking about what to rate a track between 1 and 5; I believe they would vote for either extreme - one star, or 5 stars. Because of this system I think the community rate effortless, absolutely hideous tracks and more decent, yet uninspiring tracks the same score: 1 star.

I am a little confused, we currently are a "thumbs up / thumbs down" system, are you wanting a 1-5 rating system?

Oops. sorry. my bad. I'm confused.

But isn't it weird how it's a upvote/downvote system, but it still shows the rating in stars? I think that's what confused me; being a upvote/downvote system and still having stars.

sorry for the confusion though :p My bad. staying up too late lol

The reason why your tracks get dislikes is likely not the same as the one in question for this thread. I would guess that Honza47 tracks get rated down because of the difficulty level and not based on detail / creativity as they look very incredible and must have taken a considerable amount of time and consideration to make.

Your tracks on the other hand likely get rated down because it looks as though you are soliciting "up votes" which will push it up on trending and then players that are not solicited are more likely to rate it down based on the quality of surrounding / peer tracks. Does that make sense?
