Hi guys! What's up? It's that time of the year again.

I'm on my summer break from college, so I decided to continue the yearly tradition and do another Free Rider World Cup. It's time. for the 5th edition of this contest! I know there is a big trackmaking contest going on, but I feel like since it's a different type of contest, it wouldn't be that big of a issue.
    So here it is:

    FREE RIDER WORLD CUP 5

    Presented by Totoca12

Free Rider World Cup 5 will carry the legacy of the contest hosted 2 times by DblU (in 2015 and 2016) and 2 times by me (in 2019 and 2020). This time, Eryp and BrandonBishop50 are back in the team to help me try to make a great contest again and Madara, the creator of the very sucessful Ghosting Battle Contests (1 & 2) is joining the team to help make this contest work in the best way possible.
The Free Rider World Cup 4 and the Ghosting Battle Contest 2 hosted last year were the 2 biggest ghosting contest in terms of prizes, so it's cool to have those words collide. The FR World Cup 4 got some attention due to the great amount of players involved (around 50 active players) and cash prizes and the GBC 2 had some great tracks and the biggest coin prize of all-time for a ghosting contest. So, although I'm not sure if we will be able to replicate all of those things this time, we will for sure try to host a cool contest that I hope that it'll be fun for everyone participating.

Here are some informations about the contest:

    1. Format/System

In the first Free Rider World Cup we had a Cup System. We had an Elimination Round that reduced the players to 16, and then it would be an Eliminatory Cup system with 1v1 matches between randomly paired players (in the first round, after that there was a "possible predefined path" for each ghoster).

In the second one it was a league system, where each participant that completed a track would get a punctuation based in his placement on the track. The first placed among the players in the contest would get the most points and the punctuation would decrease following each next placement among the people in the contest until it got to 1 point, then everyone else who completed the track would get 1 point. There were 8 rounds.

In the third edition, it was a similar format, following the league system. The only differences were a small variation in the points given to each placement and the number of rounds, that was 10 this time.

In the last year, in the fourth edition, we had a more complex format.
There was an elimination round like the first edition, where 32 players would advance to the next stage. Then the 32 players were seeded in 8 groups of 4 players. In each of those groups there were 3 rounds with 3 1v1 matches, where in each of those matches the players would face a different member from their own groups. Winner gets 3 points, a tie get both of the players 1 point, and losing granted you no points. Not completing the track granted -1 point for the player. The 2 best players out of each group would advance to the Round of 16, and then it would be an Eliminatory Cup system, like the first edition. The only difference is that after the elimination round, all of the players who didn't advance to the next stage would play a "Losers Championship" where all people that lost would face each other in 1v1 (and sometimes 1v1v1) matches. The winner of this championship would get a spot in the 3rd place match in the actual championship against the losers of the Semifinals.

So, since pretty much all of those formats were somewhat well-received, we figured that the best way we could decide this would be making a poll. So we had a poll up for like 1 or 2 weeks to decide the format of the contest. There were be 3 options:

    Option A: Cup Format

It would follow the first edition idea and be a championship with eliminatory matches. We would probably make an elimination round to reduce to 32 or 16 (or whatever amount we need) players and then pair the players (probably randomly) in 1v1 matches where the ghoster with the best time advances to the next stage (maybe we could do a Losers Championship again). I feel like this is a dynamic and unpredictable format that can be cool, but can be cruel depending on how the matches are sorted.

    Option B: League Format

It would be a league format following the idea of the second and third editions of the contest. We would probably do 10 rounds this time, like the third edition. Each placement you get on a track get you a suitable amount of points, and after 10 rounds the one with the most points wins. It's definitely the fairer way to do it. It can be long (or not, if the rounds are dynamic), but it's definitely a cool way to see who was the best in the contest, with less surprises.

Option C: Group Stages then Eliminatory Matches

Just like the fourth edition last year, we would probably have an elimination round to reduce to 16, 24 or 32 players and then we would divide those players in 4, 6 or 8 groups. The 2 best placed (and maybe some 3rd places if we have 24 players) would advance to the next stage, where the eliminatory matches would begin, following the ideas of the first edition (we might be able to pull off a Losers Championship again on this if this is the format chosen)

Here were the results of the poll:

    Option A: 9 votes - 17.3%
    Option B: 12 votes - 23.1%
    Option C: 31 votes - 59.6%

The format chosen was Option C, that will be more detailed below:

This format has 3 different stages and resembles the FIFA's World Cup of soccer/football.

    Stage 1: Qualifiers

As of right now, we have 37 players. The idea here is to reduce that number to 32 players, where we can work better with those numbers. There will be a Qualifiers track (the first one, to be released in January 24th), where all of the contestants will have to race to get the best time possible on there. The players with the 32 best times will advance to the next stage (Group Stage), and the remaining 5 will be eliminated. I'll make a track to announce the contest in the game to see if we can get some more players and there's a few ones that might still join, so that number may grow, but no matter how many players we get, we are reducing that amount to 32 players, so even if you think you have a great chance of qualifyng, don't forget to try to improve your ghost, because you can't see all of the 32 players in the leaderboard. We will try to make you guys updated on who's getting eliminated close to the end of the round (BrandonBishop50 is probably going to make a spreadsheet about that) so you guys aren't caught off guard, but it's a tricky round for sure.

    Stage 2: Group Stage

In the group stage, we will have a seeding process where we will sort the players out in 8 groups of 4 according to the Qualifiers placements. Madara and I are the only ones from the team that are going to participate in the contest, so the ones who won't, will be in charge of the seeding. We will make 4 pots. The best quarter of players on the Qualifiers in pot 1, then the next quarter in pot 2, then the next in pot 3 and after this one, there's pot 4. Then there will be a draw where we will randomly (using some program, number generator or whatever) put 1 player from each pot in each group.

The groups will consist of 4 players, where there will have 3 matches per player, each one against a different player from the group. Winner of the match (best time out of the 2 players in the match) gains 3 points, loser gets no points. A draw would be hard to happen, but if it happens, 1 point is given for each player. If the player misses the match or fails on making a ghost, he loses 1 point. Then, the best 2 players from each group will advance. If 2 players get tied in points, the player with the lowest combined time (sum of every time from the player's ghosts from the Group Stages) will advance. If it somehow remains tied, the spot goes to the winner of the match between the 2 players. If somehow (really?) it remains tied, the best time from the qualifiers gets the spot. If that's not enough we'll figure something out.

    Stage 3: Knockouts Stage

In the Knockouts Stage we'll have an eliminatory stage with the 16 players that advanced onto the next stage. In the Round of 16, we'll pair those 16 players t in 8 matches (see below)* and the winners advance to the next stage, the Quarterfinals. In the Quarterfinals we reduce to 8 players with 4 matches, then there's the Semifinals with 4 players in 2 matches and then Championship Finals with the 2 finalists and the 3rd Place match, that we'll talk more in a bit.

*In the Round of 16 we'll probably have the matchups lined up like that:

    1st Group A vs 2nd Group B
    1st Group B vs 2nd Group A
    1st Group C vs 2nd Group D
    1st Group D vs 2nd Group C
    1st Group E vs 2nd Group F
    1st Group F vs 2nd Group E
    1st Group G vs 2nd Group H
    1st Group H vs 2nd Group G

    Bonus: Losers Championship

Also there will be a Loser Championship, with everyone who lost except the ones in Qualifiers round, and it will be happening in the same tracks that the next stages will take place (with 2 additional ones). The losers of the group stage will battle in the next round against each other in 1v1 matches for a spot in the next round where they will face the losers of the next knockout stage. This first stage will happen during the Round of 16, and there'll be rounds for the Losers Championship in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals tracks in a parallel way to the main contest. After that, there will still be 6 players in the Losers Championship, so there will be 2 additional quick rounds for that. In the Losers Championship Semifinals there will be two 1v1v1 matches that will reveal the 2 finalists of the Loser Championship Finals. Then the 2 players have a match in another quick round and the winner will gain a spot on the 3rd Place Match against the losers of the Semifinals from the main contest, in an 1v1v1 match for the 3rd place that will happen in the same track as the main Championship Finals, that will be an 1v1 match with the 2 winners of the Semifinals.

Here is something from last year, but that is meant for 16 players. It's not 100% like the contest then, but it's pretty similar and will help visualize how things are going to go. Any questions let me know (we might update this).

We are making new spreadsheets to help visualize the whole thing. Here's some from last year to help you guys to see how things will be displayed:

We will make new ones soon.

    2. Rounds/Deadlines

The rounds will each be 3 days long in most cases (unless there's some major complications or changes). The 2 additional rounds for the Losers Championship will be only 2 days long. The deadlines may vary a little bit because of our own schedule, but we have an idea to start and close the rounds around 11pm for me (BRT), which would be 8pm CST and 9pm EST, which would work for most of the team. This would be around 2am from the next day in the GMT timezone, so you guys could use that as a reference for your own timezone. We will try to help you guys out with the times as much as we can.

    3. Types of Tracks/Trackmakers

Madara and I will be making tracks for the contest. Eryp and BrandonBishop50 might not be able to help too much with it, so we'll reach out for some trackmakers that we worked in the past and some new ones for some help, so we'll have some updates on this area soon enough. We are aiming for tracks more like they were in the Ghosting Battle Contest 2, with a decent level of difficulty (but nothing like impossible) and with more "bike focused" tracks. Last year we might have added a bit too much vehicles on the tracks, so we will totally focus on the bikes this time. Let's see what we can do.

    Current list of trackmakers:

    4. Calendar

So, here is what we came up with for the calendar. The rounds will be 3 days long for the most part. The 2 additional rounds for the Losers Championship will be the exceptions, since they will be only 2 days long. We will also have a full day for the Seeding process, since we'll need to analyze the players who advanced for the Group Stage in order to make the Seeding. The contest is starting in January 24th and ending on February 22nd, with the results, final post and hopefully an update on the prizes coming in the next day. So, here is the calendar:

PS: If a player shows some suspicious behavior in his/her ghost we might require some proof from him/her in order to the player stay in the contest. Depending on the case, the player could be banned from the contest. Confirmed uses of TAS, auto-spacebar programs and FPS slowers are some of the cases that would result in a ban from the contest.

    How to join?

This is closed now but you had to just say that you are "In" in the comments below, since we were using the poll area to decide the format of the contest. Anyone was free too join and to share about this contest with anyone in the forums and in the actual game. Anyone was able to join until the end of the first round (unless it happene to be the Option A or C and we had an "exact" number to start the contest (such as 16,24,32), which didn't happen). In this case people would have to join until the beginning of the first round.

After Noob winning the first one, Backtwice winning the second one and Anonyymi winning the 3rd and 4th editions, it was time for mudkip to win the 5th edition.

The Finnish Dynasty is over, and mudkip took the first Free Rider World Cup title for the US.
