    CONTEST IS OVER
Please see second post for results

Welcome to the third annual Picture Box Contest! This contest began two years ago as a small contest with a quick turnover. I decided to run it again last year to huge success, and so here it is again for the third year in a row. Some things have changed a little bit this year so make sure to read the entire thread. Can't way to see what you all bring to the table!

    2018 PICTURE BOX CONTEST
    Section 1 - Contest Guidelines:
    1. The goal of the contest is to create a track within the given template that shows artistic ability and good track design concepts.
    2. You MUST use the template provided. The entire track must be contained within the box, and no changes are to be made to the shape of the box or the area outside of it. Any violation of this rule will be automatically disqualified.
    3. You may not move the star or starting point either. You may add additional stars, but the star present in the template is not to be moved.
    4. NO autos, wheelies, hold up's, etc are allowed. Please create a track that requires the rider to actually play. Also grounds for automatic disqualification.
    5. Submissions must be linked in this thread and include "Picture Box Contest 2018" or something similar in the description.
    6. All entries are due by a firm deadline of Tues, July 10th at 11:59pm GMT (7:59pm US Eastern Time)
    TEMPLATE:
    Code:
    -18 1i 18 1i,-18 1i -18 cg,-18 -io -18 -1i,23g 1i 210 1i,23g -1i 23g -io,23g 1i 23g cg -18 cg,-18 -io 23g -io#-18 -1i -18 1i#T 22i k
If clarification on any of the rules is needed, please tag me in a post on this thread with the question and I will update the thread and respond accordingly.

    Section 2 - Judging Criteria:
Each track will be graded on a 15 point scale by four judges (zeke15, Eryp, Volund, and Todredrob) added together for a total of 60 points. The 15 points are broken down into 5 points for detail/artistic ability, 5 points for flow/track design, and 5 points for track integration. Here is the "rubric":
    • Detail/Artistry - 5 points - This section will be graded based on your ability to draw neatly and cohesively. Show us your artistic talent by creating unique track designs and detail with your own style. Make sure your entry is neat, and elegant to receive the most points in this section.
    • Flow/Track Design/Ride - 5 points - This section will be graded based on how well your the ride of your track fits together. This does not mean "too hard or too easy". It means that your track was well thought out, consistent in its difficulty, and has a logical flow throughout. Make sure your track is free of rough lines, gaps in the path, etc to achieve maximum points in this section.
    • Track Integration - 5 points - This section will be graded based on how well you combine the flow and ride of your track with the artistic picture you are portraying. You should try to make your track fit with the detail, and vice versa. Having a beautiful picture with no track besides a helicopter will cause you to do poorly. Make sure your detail matches your ride and that the ride is part of your drawing to receive the best possible score in this section. This is to essentially see how well you can create art that is a track at the same time, not just a track alongside art. A stunning example of this is Superposition, Wave's entry from last year.
One thing to keep in mind this year is that the template is much larger than past years. Make sure you use all the space efficiently. Seeing a lot of dead (unused) space in the track will cause you to receive a lower score.

Once again, if there are any questions, please tag me in a post on this thread.

    Section 3 - Prizes:
In the past this contest has been run with a minimal entry fee that goes into a larger coin pot for the winners, alongside donations from members. however, with the removal of temporary pro from watching videos, this is no longer doable. This year, the contest will be run entirely on donations. I am personally contributing 25k coins to be split among the top three authors. Any additional donations are extremely welcome. Donators will receive recognition in the track compilations, as well as in the thread here.

    Prizes are split as follows:

    1st Place - 18,000 coins
    2nd Place - 12,000 coins
    3rd Place - 6,500 coins

    Section 4 - Other Info
The template of this track was designed so that the individual tracks could be combined to form one large one. At the conclusion of this contest, I will be using the code from the top 10 entries, combining them, and publishing a track that showcases the entries, in order from 1st to 10th. By entering this contest, you are automatically consenting to my use of your track code for this purpose. All donors will also be recognized in a special section on this track.

In the next post, I will keep track of all the entries and their authors so that people can view what others have made

It would be very helpful if you decided to share this with friends so we can get plenty of people to join!

DONORS: Thank you to these donors for going above and beyond in adding coins to the pot. Thanks for your contribution!
    - cctvcctvcctv with a huge 10,000 coin donation!
    - TallTexan with a 1500 coin donation!

    Constructive Criticism and Judges Scores:
    Volund's Judging (open)
    Brann Beist by BattleBro
Detail: Unique and interesting subject drawn, however not done too well. Detail makes sense relative to subject and foreground matter; however, the stuff in the background looks very odd; I don't really know what I am looking at. All in all a solid effort, dragon could use some improvement that will come with further practice. 3/5
Ride: I really am not a fan of any ride that relies too heavily on boosts and gravities to get you through, and the utilisation of the dragon as part of the track - while innovative - just wasn't that great in execution. 1.5/5
Track Integration: As mentioned previously, the integration of your dragon with the track while innovative and solid in design, lacked in execution. 3/5
    Total: 7.5/15

Caves in a Box by Thunder12
Detail: Spammy, uninteresting and hurt my eyes while playing. Do appreciate the bars you have in the background, however it is relatively clear that this track was less about the detail and more about the track. 1/5
Ride: Pretty neat ride, fun without being a holdup and kept my attention. Use of the truck was neat, helicopter felt a bit redundant however. 3.5/5
Track Integration: Don't have CC for you, it's a cave track lol. 2/5
    Total: 6.5/15

    Bisram by Cynic/Armain
Detail: Insane. Your best detail by far. Only gripe - and a small one at that - is that your water detail needs improvement, imo. Other than that, incredible; background detail is done immensely well, and that first tree and the rocks pop so well. 5/5
Ride: Actually very good for what its worth with the amount of detail you have; I figured it would be a glitchy ride, yet it wasn't. Use of truck was very good, heli not so much. 4/5
Track Integration: Excellent, not much really to say. 5/5
    Total: 14/15

    Highway by Nefarious
Detail: What is there is of high quality, and what isn't as good (ie the dinosaur thing) was clearly was unfinished. Can't really say much, other than finish tracks lol. 4/5
Ride: Poorly designed, I understand it is unfinished but you can skip half the track with the helicopter. Balloon therefore was made redundant, as was the checkpoint among other things. 1/5
Track Integration: Unfinished everything, can't really judge anything. 1/5
    Total: 6/15

    Wired by F-O-X
Detail: I thought it was an unfinished track at first, but seeing as though you made no mention of this I can only assume you thought it was finished. My tip is to add detail where you can and where it is most effective; in this case you had a heap of blank space to fill, both in the foreground and background. Even basic stone detail would have made this seem more complete. As well as this, you have a floating pole randomly placed for your track's ride; make it seem connected with everything else by using detail ! What you did have, however, was pretty good. 1/5
Ride: I couldn't finish this myself as I'm a pretty average ghoster, but from what I saw of your ghost the ride seems to have some thought behind it. Can see a decent flow to it, though if you have used brush for your ride my advice is don't; use the straight line tool, it is far better. 3/5
Track Integration: Pretty good all in all, I have little to comment on. 2/5
    Total: 6/15

    Kurdosiale by FreakyK.T
Detail: I think I am looking at two different landscapes: a cave and a swamp sort of thing. Very interesting theme and track integration, and while the detail is consistent and ok, it certainly could use improvement. The rain and water is relatively fine, although your rock formations' detail is pretty average. Would recommend checking out Maple's Detailing thread for tips on how to improve this area of your detail; if its any consolation, I am of the opinion that rock detailing is pretty difficult, I still don't really have a good grasp on how to do it myself. Your cave detail is also fairly average; in the future I'd avoid repeating detail (like your weeds/vines) as it detracts more than it adds to your theme. Mix it up a bit! 2.5/5
Ride: Rare footage of helicopter used effectively! Seriously, heli part was actually very neat in the cave, and use of truck is clever. All in all a fun and challenging track, great stuff. 4/5
Track Integration: Very very good, you didn't sacrifice one for the other and they flowed seamlessly. Great stuff. 3/5
    Total: 9.5/15

    The Thunder Head by Netsik
Detail: Finally, a style of detail I can give comment on. Mountains and foreground are very good, and the use of clouds to frame the picture is a great addition, as is the style of clouds you have going for yourself. The centre tree could do with improvement, particularly as your centrepiece. I can give you a heap of in-depth cc if you would like, just pm me. Rock detail is neat, though could also be improved. Nice house in the background! 4/5
Ride: Short, alright, not much to critique or say. 3.5/5
    Track Integration: Very good! 3.5/5
    Total: 11/15

    Krasnoyarsk by MyrraWolf
Detail: Such a shame you thought this track wasn't worth finishing, such a unique theme and style for a theme which is usually very mundane and done pretty poorly. The adidtion of the Soviet flag was a really nice tough, and your main building is really good. Rest of the track is very empty, which is a shame as it was such a good start. 3.5/5
Ride: Not a fan of using boosts to dictate where I go, and you can skip them regardless; also first part is kind of dumb in that you can't pass it easily without just holding up, even though it isn't a hold up auto. Put more thought into your track next time : P. 2/5
Track Integration: Done very well until the boost part; why not have the rider go over the rooftops of the two unfinished houses? Would have boosted this score significantly. 3/5
    Total: 8.5/15

    PBC 2018 by joethehobo
Detail: Hot tip: avoid using the grid as a vice for detailing the sorts of things you have drawn, it rarely if ever looks good. Detail is present, just needs (a lot of) improvement. 1.5/5
    Ride: lol 1/5
Track Integration: You certainly integrated your detail with your ride, just the ride was nothing short of abysmal 2.5/5

    Eryp's Judging (open)

    Battlebro:
    D: 3/5
    R: 2/5
    TI: 2/5
    Total: 7/15
CC: Wish you had had more time to complete this to a better extent, but this is solid. Definitely shows your potential as both as trackmaker and detailer who, when they have the time, can put out something amazing.

    Thunder12:
    D: 1/5
    R: 4/5
    TI: 1/5
    Total: 6/15
CC: It's a fun, well-made ride that incorporates some of the new powerups and vehicles, and I like that a lot about your entry. Something I could have fun with trying to get a good ghost on. That being said, the detail wasn't spectacular or anything, but it served its purpose. Same with track integration.

    Cynic:
    D: 5/5
    R: 4/5
    TI: 5/5
    Total: 14/15
    CC: Not bad.

    Nefarious:
    D: 4/5
    R: 1/5
    TI: 3/5
    Total: 9/15
CC: This is a nice start to a track. The detail works well with the way the track was built. Clearly unfinished though, and ride could and should definitely suck less.

    F-O-X:
    D: 1/5
    R: 2/5
    TI: 2/5
    Total: 5/15
CC: Could just use some detail. If it was finished to a more thorough extent I'd rate it higher. Ride wasn't intuitive either really.

    FreakyK.T:
    D: 3/5
    R: 4/5
    TI: 2/5
    Total: 9/15
CC: The effort is there. Unique way of making a track in that you split the box up into two separate things, which is cool. You also used most of the space in the box for the ride, which made it more fun. Detail in relation to the track could be a bit better though.

    Netsik:
    D: 5/5
    R: 2/5
    TI: 4/5
    Total: 11/15
CC: Very simple track. Detail is well made and works well with what you have. This is probably the only track here where the box doesn't really help it. Without any spacial restrictions and as a full-sized track this would be very solid.

    MyrraWolf:
    D: 3/5
    R: 1/5
    TI: 2/5
    Total: 6/15
CC: Should've finished it. Looks a bit empty without background detail, but still works well. Ride isn't anything special, really the biggest thing holding this back from being better.

    joethehobo:
    D: 1/5
    R: 0/5
    TI: 1/5
    Total: 2/5
    CC: No

    zeke15's Judging (open)
    Brann Beist by BattleBro
Detail - 2/5 - Consistent and relatively clean, however your form could definitely improve. The detail on the head of the dragon was great however it didn;t follow for the ret of his body. Beyond the dragon itself the foreground and background had little to nothing
Ride - 3/5 - Wasn't bad by any means, however I think you relied a bit too much on power-ups for such a small space. When working with less space, use the track to keep the rider's speed down so you can have more ride to it.
Integration - 2/5 - Riding on the dragons back is a classic, however tasteful way of integrating a dragon. Score is still low though because that was really it, the rest of it is just relying on the bounds of the box and gravity instead of what you drew.
    Total: 7/15

Caves in a Box by Lightning12/Thunder12
Detail - 1/5 - Consistent, though severely lacking detail. Try adding more depth to your detail, creating a dynamic foreground with more shape in the rocks of the cave, and making the background more interesting as well.
Ride - 4/5 - I'm personally a big fan of these types of tracks. The difficulty fit well for the theme and the combination of fast and slow sections really forces the rider to control their speed which is great. You also fit quite a bit in the space you had. I was however not a fan of the heli at the end. It just didn't seem to fit
Integration - 2/5 Not terrible, but relatively easy in this regard. Cave detail in a cave ride. One of the easiest details to fit to your track's ride.
    Total: 7/15

    Bisram by Cynic
Detail - 5/5 - Absolutely stellar. Some of the better detail we've seen in this contest through all the years. I like how you kept the density of your detail consistent. No space, even those that were less important, was left out. Only complaint is that the first tree gets lost in the background as it looses the black lines going up
Ride - 4/5 - I really enjoy the parts on the ground, however I think there is a little too much Heli for a track of this size. Also try not to use so many stars in the heli portion. It forces the player to follow their path too closely rather than creating more diversity in paths, and as such, more room for skill based ghosts.
Integration - 4/5 - Nature tracks like this are almost objectively the hardest to properly integrate an enjoyable ride into that doesn't conflict with the detail. You did a really good job here, I just feel like the truck and heli detract from it a bit. They are scapegoats to make a usable ride in the space
    Total: 13/15

    Highway by Nefarious
Detail - 3/5 - I love the style. It is ever so slightly sloppy that it makes it look very sketch like (not a bad thing at all), especially without gray lines that would anti-alias in any way. I would have really liked to see this finished.
Ride - 2/5 - Fairly choppy, and a little on the difficult side. I wasn't a fan of the balloon at the end, it seemed kind of unnecessary. Beginning also felt very luck based
Integration - 2/5 - What you had worked really well, but there just wasn't much overall. Once again, would love to see it finished
    Total: 7/15

    Wired by F-O-X
Detail - 1/5 - Very unfinished but what you have so far looks promising
Ride - 2/5 - I love what you were going for, but with the design of the bottom portion, this should really be MTB, also need to work on making sure the track isn't speed glitchy in some places.
    Integration - 0/5 - There's really nothing here so can't say much
    Total: 3/15

    Kurdosiale by FreakyK.T
Detail - 1/5 - Don't really know what any of it is supposed to be other than rain I think in the bottom part. Make sure your detail has a purpose and that the rider can tell that
Ride - 1/5 - way too much heli. The truck is okay, but only the first like 3 seconds of the track are even on the bike.
Integration - 1/5 - Don't split the track in half without reason like you did, it isn't cohesive at all. Detail also didn't have much of a theme so it was hard for it to fit the track.
    Total: 3/15

    The Thunder Head by Netsik
Detail - 5/5 - Looks wonderful. great balance between light and dark for outlines vs minute detail. Only minor complaint is that the foreground on the two bottom corners should have a bit more detail in it. The white space there doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the foreground toward the center, but thats being really nitpicky
Ride - 3/5 - Was honestly much faster than I think it should have been. Also think the boosts were unnecessary, however all in all it was still good and flowed well.
Integration 5/5 - The ride fits perfectly within your detail and doesn't seem out of place in the slightest. Stellar job here
    Total: 13/15

    Krasnoyarsk by MyrraWolf
Detail - 3/5 - Really solid for what is there, but as with some of the others, unfortunately unfinished
Ride - 1/5 - Unnecessarily frustrating, and also quite short. It was very choppy at the beginning and the gravity/boosts really detract. Also unfinished.
Integration - 1/5 - For the little bit that is there it fits very well, but unfinished and lacking entirely on the right side.
    Total: 5/15

Well I great news for you, zeke15! :)

I'm not gonna be able to join in whatsoever due to the fuckin' fact that as a fake administrator you've honestly made a custom, yet misunderstandable and hesitating contest that makes it the most strenuous, complicated and impossible guidelines to accomplish and participate in, unlike the previous contest beforehand. This also makes the whole contest so harshly hard to be able to win to victory and is less addictive, intuitive, efficient and straightforward to give a try, no matter how it goes. The contest, in addition, makes me so creative luckily that I wanted to be capable of making the same contest you made today but by a lot of completely different techniques within. Every time I afterwards try to practice on these included important guidelines correctly, then I might all of a sudden be permanently disqualified in any part of a rule, regarding the difficulty. This could then result my contest enjoyment to be disqualifyingly abandoned for the rest of more than my life. Please bear in mind that I'm not a perfect player at all in FRHD, because from my experience my tracks have been kept like crap all of my days, as, of course, I spent way more than just weeks making a lot of decent track improvements within minutes, seeming like thus it took extremely tedious to add much more detail upon. So please don't try to receive us yet another contest not only that has the most difficult requirements ever, but also that will take us on a requirement-obeying spree that might subsequently, suddenly disqualify us for not doing enough accurate requirements you told us to do under requirement conditions. This requirement group is about to get thoroughly harsh so don't you dare even think the f*ck about that.:thumbsdown::rofl:
