Also make it less linear. Trees are rarely ever perfectly straight.

Actually false. Nature does follow a pattern. That's why you CAN recognize a tree from a blade of grass. The growth of the branches and leaves usually follows a recognizable pattern, and have you ever heard of the golden ratio? It's in basically every plant. The leaves of a lot of things grow 277.5 degrees apart (may not be 277.5, but it is around there).

You are technically right that there is no perfect tree, but there is a difference between bad ones and good ones. I can easily draw a bad tree, and I can barely draw a good tree. Placing lines randomly does not make a tree look good. So if you want a tree to look good you have to follow some pattern. I'm not saying your trees don't look good or anything against you. I just wanted to point this out.

 

also, a decent amount of plants grow with some relation to the golden ration (which is ~1.618). don't ask me how or why, I don't know.
I think he meant to a normal human extent though. no one's gonna notice that every single leaf on a tree is so far apart or that a blade of grass is so much when compared to a different plant.

My favorite example of this is viewing drainage patterns from satellite. Our earth is incredible at making patterns and fractals, and while nature can be unpredictable, it can also be very predictable.


From braided tundra rivers,


to fractal mountain valleys,

Saudi tidal bays,

and desert sand dunes, cut by a dry riverbed. Our earth is very patterned, and it my not be apparent from the ground. But with a drone or satellite, patterns can be found.

what a storm came across and bent a branch ...
i mean nature is probably predictable (extremly difficult), but we are drawing here, and i don't think it matters if your tree is a little too bent.
For me, nature is the funest thing to draw cause you have to follow very few rules ^^ (but yes i mean, some people don't always find it easy, and yeah a bunch of random lines wont lead to much, but i would recomend, for people trying to learn, to look for a picture of a tree (with not too much branches) and draw the outline of it... )

 

the very end of my current wip. Most of it is in a cave, trying to find the correct path to take, in order to escape. I made these mountains so much bigger and more than I usually do, and with more detail than the rest of the track, in order to how spectacular things look, and the relief of escaping. I also added more depth to show how it streches on extremely far, unlike the claustrophobic caves.
