OFFICIAL FEATURED GHOSTS REVIEWS UPDATE (PART 1) - INTRO [POST 1 OF 5]

Well, it took way more than expected, but it's finally here. First of all I would like to apologize on behalf of the team for taking too long, but it is what it is, life happens for everyone and as we get older we usually get busier, so it isn't easy to keep up with everything, especially things we do voluntarily on our free time like FRHD. We managed to still keep some minor things going like the Ghosting Awards, but we ended up having major delays on the Official Featured Ghosts reviews and the making of the Top 100 list, that hopefully will be out soon as well, since it's mostly done. But I'm happy that we were able to advance on things these last few months. 2023 was a busy year for me with things like work and college and 2024 seems to be following the same path, but it's cool to still be able to get things done here from time to time. We can't promise anything, but we'll try to take last than a year for the next one, lol.

Yeah, you could say that it wasn't a year, since the last update was posted on January 28th, 2023, 346 days ago, but on that update we set the deadline for January 13th for ghosts that we would consider, so yeah, 361 days ago, pretty close to a year, which obviously isn't the ideal. We'll try to get some things reviewed not too long after they are suggested, so we can avoid things piling up too much. Let's see if we can do this since my quote below from the last update didn't age well:

What was the deadline set for ghosts being reviewed on this update?

Well, everything after the last update's deadline (January 13th, 2023) up to the end of last year was considered. Ghosts from this year MIGHT get on PART 2 already if we don't take too long for that, but I'm not sure yet. Maybe in another update a few months from now. Also, if we are missing a ghost suggested from the period mentioned let us know and we might include it on PART 2.

PART 1? After a year? What do you mean?

We had 109 ghosts to review from last year and we managed to fully review 95 of them, which is great. As for the other 14 ghosts, either we weren't able to came to an agreement right away or some of the mods missed some of these ghosts and we weren't able to get together again to decide those yet, but we hope to get those remaining ghosts reviewed soon. We just need to get something out already.

Who reviewed these ghosts?

I know it might be kinda confusing of who is an active Ghost Mod right now, but although we did have a little input here and there from other players, the reviews were mostly made by Totoca12 (aka myself), Sidewalk and Xenom, so let's thank them as well for their efforts. We don't have active reviews on our own ghosts, so I feel like it's a fair and balanced team with ghosters from different generations, combining experience, knowledge, skills and activity.

So how this update will work?

After this Intro post, there will be a post with the reviews for the ghosts that were either a challenge that we mentioned that we would consider for a feature if they weren't beaten OR a second place ghost from ShamatoZ's case aftermath that we didn't review the last time for some reason. The 3rd post will start the "NEW SUGGESTIONS" and will include all ghosts that were not considered feature worthy. In the 4th post, we'll have ghosts that were also not featured, but that we think that are close and can become features if beaten, cleaned up or fixed (if they are like broken, for example), so we made them a "challenge". In the 5th and last post there were will be the new featured ghosts, as long as the unverified features as well. The unverifed features also serve as some sort of challenge, since if they are beaten by "verified ghosters", they will most likely be automatic features.

It doesn't cut too much of the original auto time and like over 2/3 of it is just flying in the air, so I don't know. Nicely done, though. (NO FEATURE)

I think this was made at the end of 2022 and still stood as the ONLY legitimate ghost on that track, so it got us thinking. We have been putting this as a challenge for so long and no one managed to match that. I know it's a dangerous feature, since it's really short and can set a precedent, but we really think this is dope. We weren't all 100% onboard at first but we eventually agreed on a feature here for Setsu. Here are some of our comments during the reviews:

"It's short but I think the difficulty makes up for it personally. Looks super hard. Fantastic control, especially with the brakes." - Sidewalk

"I usually would go with a no for ghosts this short, but I don't think I will this time. The track has been out for nearly a year, we advertised this as a challenge earlier this year, it has a couple thousands plays, so I don't know. He's the only one that did it. So unless people can convince me this isn't super hard to do and that's something that the average good player can do, I think I'll have to vote for a feature here." - Totoca12

I added this ghost to the reviews because Unghosted suggested his ghost on the other version of this track (https://www.freeriderhd.com/t/1025-african-expedition/r/unghosted), but Anonyymi's ghost on this identical version is 0.7 second faster. It's also weird that Unghosted's ghost looks cleaner and with less obvious mistakes than Anonyymi's, so I was initially very inclined to feature this (when I had only seen Unghosted's ghost). After seeing Anonyymi's ghost, despite acknowledging it's a great ghost, there's still some clear possible improvements on the track, so I think I'll say no. It can be a challenge, since I don't think it's that far from a feat." (CHALLENGE)

It's a weird case because Xenom could review Cerasium's ghost but they were also tied. Xenom was on the fence about a challenge or a feature, I was more inclined to a challenge and Sidewalk was more inclined to feature both ghosts. I think their ghosts are quite different at some spots, so I really think that one of them or someone else can combine their best parts and beat this, so since we couldn't agree on the feature 100% here, we decided to keep it as a challenge. Quoting myself: "Both ghosts are great, but they both show where the other ghost could have been improved, since they are not too similar. So I'll go with a no. I guess it could be a challenge as well, maybe one of them can get a little improvement and possibly get the definitive feature." (CHALLENGE)

Just watch RandomEntirely's ghost on the track. He has a fair lead for the first 33 seconds and he definitely could take the W if he pulled off CHARREDLIZARD21's cut. I feel like we need to see a CHARREDLIZARD21's ghost with RandomEntirely's first 33 seconds + the cut or a ghost from RandomEntirely or someone else keeping up with RandomEntirely's pace and making the cut. That could be featured in my opinion, so right now I'll say that it's a no, but also put this as some sort of a challenge, since it might not be far from a feature." (CHALLENGE)

Happy we finally got this out. This took a long time to write, so I'll be updating the stats, pages, spreadsheets and posts in the following days. Thanks everyone for your patience to have your ghosts reviewed, we'll try to not take that long for the next ones. We are already actively working on Part 2 for the remaining few ghosts from last year, so let's see how that goes. If there's any relevant typos, mistakes or if we missed your ghost that was suggested on this thread last year, let us know, we'll try to include it in the part 2.

Also, MAJOR CONGRATS to Xenom for beating Cerasium's all-time record. I'll have to double check that later since it's only by 1 feature and there's lots of ghosts in the post, but I'm pretty sure he got the record. Congrats to the players that are coming back to the list as well, such as Setsu, Unghosted and Zycerak. Welcome back! See you guys around soon, since we are also working to get the next Ghosting Awards and Top 100 list done in the following weeks. Let's see.
