It's just that some people won't know what the word means, since it's quite an old one and normally only used in very formal situations like legal documents and such.

Does it have anything, however, to do with "puns" and stuff, respectively?

Yeah, I've probably jotted down "thereat" for strange reasons, because it's probably worth noting that I put its syllables together from prefixes to suffixes, to make it the fact that the word "there-" means "that," and the word "-at" means, well, just "at," so notably the word "thereat" should mean "at that (something)," the definition where "at" comes before "that," and then a noun afterwards. This word, after all, is luckily considered a conjunction, as well as the fact that it's a form of other words: "whereat" and "hereat." Just so you know.
