This thread is made to discuss the new advertisements that play before tracks. If you haven't seen them already, new ads have been put on tracks before you can play them. You can usually skip them for just a couple of seconds, but they are annoying IMO.
They are annoying but I'm ok with it because this website needs a way to make money besides free rider pro, and these adds probably help them a lot, so as long as it helps them make money to make improvements to the game I'm ok with it (you can also skip the adds immediately by pressing f)
Alright, let me preface this post by saying I have no problem with the ads. The site needs to make money some way to keep up with maintenance costs, and I fully understand that. However, I think the current system needs to be changed. I don't know much about how these ad services work, but with whatever system the site is using right now is allowing malicious website ads to "slip through the cracks". Here's an example about what I'm talking about: A quick google search about "slimcleaner" has shown me that it's a malicious program. I'm sure there's other malicious ads that will show up before tracks, and I recall also seeing a Windows 10 driver updater, and these are also very often malicious programs that are disguised. My main problem with these kinds of ads is that kids make up a large part of the FreeRiderHD userbase. Kids that are in elementary school and even middle school are very impressionable, and are very likely to fall for these kinds of ads and cause problems on their and their parents computers. I'm hoping someone who is experienced with how these ads work can chime in with an ad service (or whatever) that is less likely to display these kinds of ads, and I hope that the admins are willing to make a change so that these kinds of ads aren't displayed to the young userbase. That's something you'd expect to see at some janky flash game site, and I think we're better than that. Stig Char
Exactly what I've been referencing. Some of the ads are unsafe / virus ridden, and there's always been those clickbait-y 'this person in __ did __! doctors HATE her! click to find out HOW' I have no issue with ads as it helps generate money to keep the site going and support it's admins, but like what FreddySpaghetti said, this should be addressed as there's plenty of young and easily swayed users who could be downloading unsafe stuff onto their computers through this stuff. It's also not a very good first impression to leave on anyone visiting your site because it's, well, kinda cheap. Raptor literally put it perfectly: I couldn't agree more.
I understand the need for ad revenue while operating a free online game, however.. When they introduced FRHDPro, it added additional revenue, on top of the existing sidebar ads. The old sidebar ads did not interrupt gameplay, and quite often advertised businesses/products relevant to me. With the introduction of the new ads in the game window, gameplay has been interrupted by ads that sometimes try to play for up to 15 seconds, and as mentioned above are often completely irrelevant or even malicious in nature. Because of the new game window ads, I will be taking a break from FRHD. I'm not sure how long for, but I will extend my break if/when I find these ads have worsened or are even still active. Making money is one thing, but alienating your user base is another... I'm actually pretty disappointed considering I've been here since the beginning of FRHD. Good luck all.
