    Round 1

Thank you to everyone who entered and a big high five to everyone who also participated in the practice round. I know all of you guys were ready for this and I'm not going to hold it back from you guys any longer. The Remix Contest 4 is officially underway! The track for the first round as previously stated is Glorious by plastic_pineapple. Plastic was a revered author and VIP user on the former Canvas Rider, also having participating in helping and by providing tracks in the past and a good friend to me and contest sponsor, Ness. At the time this track was made, Plastic was known for his collaborations with Ness and displaying skatepark-like flow on all of his tracks. Round 1 ends on Midnight of January 8th (EST). I can't wait to see what you guys will make, here are the codes:

    Practice Round Rankings

First off, thank you to everyone who participated in the practice round. It was tremendously successful and it blew me away how much participation was had. Also, I want to thank Ness for allowing everyone to create such great tracks from his own. The Practice Round was extremely competitive and speaks volumes to the potential success to be had in the contest. Wherever you rank here good or bad, it does not count. The Practice Round is a learning tool, for improvement, so that you won't be thrown to the dogs on Round 1. Take this as its meant to be used and let it inspire you to create something better in the Rounds ahead. Individual favorites by myself and guest judge Ness are marked as such. Here are the results:

    1st.
Olympus by alexander 10/10 **Ness’s Pick**

This is absolutely extraordinary. I love than rather taking an easy out you took the opportunity to apply a completely new theme to the track consistently, similiar to CityShep's application of a new theme, I feel this one supersedes his on the creative and track aspect bounds of remixing. The track aspect of the remix appeared to take over the detail, which track-to-detail I feel is the pinnacle of effective trackmaking. That being said enough of the original was left to be within the creative bounds of a remix. Some of the specific characteristics I like is the reimagining of the flag, adding helicopter effectively (Note to everyone: don't just add helicopter, make it effective within the creative confines of playability and remixing) and the exemplary cloud detail which perfected the Olympus theme. Without a doubt, this wins the practice round unless someone else rolls out something unbelievable. Great work, and I can't wait to see more.

    Ness wrote:

The keys to a great remix are to add extra, to alter, and to erase. To do these all efficiently is to have a theme and mission in mind. With Alex's entry, you can see clearly that each of his moves are deliberate and very beneficial to the track. He altered the track for a more technical ride, erased the building background and a bit of the foam pit (only keeping what helped his vision), and added extra technical ride to add to the feeling and theme of his track. The interesting building detail added character to the environment, the clouds gave atmosphere, the rocks and shading implemented truly gorgeous detail. And the heli was a nice touch too! Truly utilizing everything he had at his disposal. Other competitors would be smart to learn from this entry.

Additional note: This track received first place on the back of exemplary use of theme and detail and track to match.

    2nd. Sukter by THEend 9.7/10 *pssst’s pick*

This is sick dude. This really peaks remixing in track and detail aspects. I love how you redirected the track creatively while still incorporating the original track seamlessly and the detail fits extremely well. I love how in this remix you let your idea not only influence the change in detail but the change in track as well and how it came out so fluid and perfect. Some things that really speak to me is in the background I see what could be interpreted as ramps from the original, among others, and the detail of the tree house, I was really hoping someone would also use that idea and do it better than I did. Also moving the flag and adding powerlines were very nice touches. Amazing job, can't wait to see more.

Additional note: This track was close in competition to Cityshep, but essentially won 2nd based on full usage and expansion of theme from the original.

    3rd. Norilsk by CityShep 9.6/10

I really loved this, you seem to have already got the concept. It's one thing to add ground detail, skatepark detail and whatnot, it's a whole another beast to implement an original theme into a remix which you did fabulously. It does feel like a snowy tundra landscape with some crazy looking buliding in the background, which I find to be second to none so far, in consideration of the detail aspect of remixing. Also in that sense you allowed your idea for the detail to influence how you altered the track, that's pretty much the pinnacle of successful detailing to trackmaking. The individual characteristics that I love and raise the overall feel is the snow and ice dripping off everything, their is so much consistency in applying detail to the theme its crazy. You clearly understand the idea of remixing and I cant wait to see more.

    4th. Carvahall by codrey 9.2/10

This is fantastic. The reusage is astounding, and thus expansion is as well. I used to be Eragon fan some time ago, and I love that you took that idea and used it as inspiration. Personally I love the house, cloud and tree detail. All light but serving the purpose very nicely. I would suggest trying to think of other ways to incorporate the original in areas where the track looks blanker (the right). But for the moment, I cannot knock anything about this track as it is very well done.

Additional note: This was a very hard decision between your’s and Armain’s and essentially won due to execution of theme and consistency of theme, as well as looking cleaner. I also conferred with Ness on the competition between these two, this was our resolution.

    5th. Fluvidus by Armain 9.1/10

I love the additions you made and the track aspect of the remix is solid. But that detail though, this reimagining of the original skatepark idea presented by Ness I love, and the detail is consistent throughout. I would also like to comment on the individual things I really liked: I thought the graffiti was on point and I really like it that you would write a shoutout of the contest within the track, newer users are probably going to play the track and be interested in what the Remix Contest 4 is. Also I really liked the recycle bin and the tree, both had standout characteristics that fit the scene. As it appears to me it seems you truly get the idea of remixing.

Additional note: On revisiting this track for further judging, I found that the track lacked consistency by theme, feeling random at times i.e. the shifting ground detail, columns to the left. While random, is good for some situations, I felt the look presented upon these did not match what the track could’ve been.

6th. Ishu's Practice Remix by IshuDaBurgerman 8.8/10 (tie)

Very cool work. I love how you rerouting the track by repurposing obstacles in the track through adding a tree to block off the first ramp and a bridge over where the foam pit was. I also really dug the detail, very reminiscent of old black oriented detail, which I'm glad you made it fit to this purpose. I like your tree and cliff detail in particular, it seemed well done. My only negative is I don't especially like how the clouds behind the city background looked, for this tracks overall theme I would've suggested scrapping the background and making a more favorable one from scratch. All in all nice job and can't wait to see more.

Additional note: I originally did not have it this high up, however Ness convinced me to bump it up based on the quality of detail.

    6th. quest/power by WheelieMaker 8.8/10 (tie)

I love how you altered both ends of the track, adding characterization to them, rather than leaving them as ends, like Ness did. That being said, I really liked the detail of the floating land to the left. I also love what you did to the right, expanding it, and making it become more of a smooth trial feel, truly adding something advance to the track. I really don't see any negatives to pinpoint; you've done this before and you clearly know what to do.

    8th. Insight by Pancakes345 8.6/10

This was really fun dude. I love how you expanded the track off its edges while seamlessly incorporating what was in the original. That being said I like how you continued the skatepark theme and concept while addding your twist on it similar to your track Palace of Fun, among others. Along with that I admire what you did where the foam pit was, I think that'll be cool to see if any ghosters try to use the blocks to increase speed. Anyways, this remix is A+ in the track aspect, but you will need significant improvements detail-wise to have success.

Additional note: This was hard to decide between Mark; this track received the nod for having more flow within the original layout of the track and creating a better overall feel. Ness also pushed for this one.

    9th. Longevity by Jefe 8.4/10

That took me way to long to ghost than I would have liked to, haha. Really nice job dude I thought it was super creative. I really dig the floating rocks concept that you do in a lot of your tracks and implemented so well in this one, kind of a trippy or dream-like track. I thought the cross and the clock with the infinity symbol had really nice touches that added to the overall feel of the track. I really liked your alterations in regards to the track aspect of the remix, it took a while for me to ghost, but I thought having to control the rider between gravity switches was an excellent challenge. All in all I really liked it, there is no negatives I can really point to; I can't wait to see more.

    10th. 8-bit PRC by MarkVeiermann 8.3/10

Very fun and similar to the track experimentation exhibited by Pancakes. I love how you made expansions within the confines of the track rather than branching off the ends, rather it became a consistent reroute from your track scattered around the original. I thought the additions were fun and original. This will definitely be a fun track for ghosters in the future. This was great within the track aspect of remixing.

    11th. Divergent by Coil 8.1/10

I thought this was very cool. I love the change from the original skatepark detail to your own nature detail, I think that worked well. Also, I love some of the track aspects you changed. Rerouting the track was an excellent touch. Some of the things I particularly liked was the smoke coming out of the ground, where the gravities in the hole are and the block that serves as an obstacle on the upper platform at the beginning. I thought you succeeded in making the track your own. Very good work.

    12th. R3MIX by speedy__XD 8/10

I love the basic detail, it's pretty reminiscent of all times, and the background while minimal sets the tone well. I also liked the remix in regards to the track aspect, taking away the free roam element and guiding the rider, while adding elements that fit your character. To dig deeper in that, I like how you let your idea of how the track should be overcome what was there before at the right places, which is something that is important to master in order to have success in this contest. Great job.

13th. Ness001 by Ness [Remix] by greg 7.8/10 (tie)

I love this dude. I like how you reused much of the original but added key parts that made it flow a lot better than the original. I really dug how you altered the high platforms to give them a cleaner and more realistic look. The track aspect of the remix is on point. And the detail, including the house and the birds look awesome. You definitely understand the idea of remixing, so there is not anything really to pinpoint as a negative.

Additional note: I loved it for the same look that you did on you Datura remix a long time ago, I think that style you bring to skateparks is very aesthetically pleasing.

14th. Remix Contest Practice Round by gr611 7.8/10 (tie)

This is sweet dude. I thought you did with the track and surrounding additions were very creative. I love how you made the track somewhat of a puzzle to find out the route and made it flow seamlessly into what you kept from the original. As far as the track aspect goes this is a solid remix, but more detail will be needed to have success when the contest begins. Great work though.

    15th. RC4 Practice by mR..A 7.6/10

This is really cool. I love how you expanded upon the track itself and changed it into a multi-route trial concept. Some aspects of interesting character would be the part to the right of the beginning where the rider goes upside down and how you personalized the gravities in adding ladders and your name. You truly put yourself into the track and I really dig it. I don't see any negatives really, it's just an all around solid and simplistic practice round entry.

    16th. TESTPATTERN001 by octo 7.5/10

The detail as me and Ness conferred with eachother is extremely inventive and had this been finished it would have been in the Top 5. I love the use of dark shadow shading to create a distinct look to the track, along with characteristics such as the little man and the computer. Had this track been properly finished I envision one of the most original of all time.

    17th. Lazy Lake by RiderExtreme2 7.4/10 (tie)

This track makes its mark based on usage of theme, rather than quality as it appears sloppily done. But the themed detail-to-track influence speaks volumes, in reference to characteristics including the lighthouse and the boat. A feel in this track spoke better than the quality of, had more time been put into perfecting the theme and detail within the track, it surely would’ve been Top 10.

    18th. 16:24 by YoYo124 7.4/10 (tie)

It's amazing how much a bomb can change the overall feel of a track. This may be the best alteration in regards to the track aspect of remixing so far that I've seen during the practice round. Because it started as a skatepark and now appears to be a nature trial. I really liked your reusage of the original and using additions to redirect the rider. For the practice round this is a very solid entry. You definitely understand the concept of remixing and what you need to do in the contest to have success.

Additional note: At the time it was the best track aspect alteration, however since it fell back and was put into context. Likely, to have success you will have to up the ante on detail.

19th. RCE 4 Practice Round by FOIL 7.3/10

Pretty sweet. This is definitely the kind of thing I would expect from you. I love the obscure additions that you made to the track, and how you reused some of the original in your effort to expand upon your own ideas. I really dug the floating squares, I thought that provided an interesting extra challenge. I also liked the change of the foam pit, to an addition to the track. I think this is a solid experimentation upon the track aspect of remixing. I thought the detail was pretty good for the purpose, of course more will be needed to have success in the contest.

    20th. Practice Round by Max007x 7.2/10

Although you attempted to make something laughably bad, it still is better arguably better than a few. The drawings you made honestly are pretty creative, and if they were done at a much higher level they could be comparable to abstract entries such as crane's Artemis and Psychosis from last contest. Obviously that's not what you were going for but you get the bigger picture. Anyways good work and good laugh, can't wait for what you make next.

21st. Mislead by Todredrob 7/10 (tie)

There is a cool concept here as to the track being converted to cliffs and being carried on out to each end of the track. However, that is what carries it. The detail bar is going to have to be raised in order for you to have success. I understand nature detail may not be your forte, I suggest coming up with creative ways to detail and improved theme application for the contest.

22nd. Ness Sunday Afternoon Remix by genericusername 7/10 (tie)

I like how you took his foam pit as an opportunity to change and expend on the track while keeping it true to the original through reusage of original track and ideas. Not really much to comment on specifically, but to make sure you know, you are going to have to be able to add detail to be successful in the contest. All around I see this as solid experimentation with the track aspect of remixing.

23rd. dried out by Egghead 6.8/10

Yeah there was no need to really go out since it's just practice, based on your previous experience I have high hopes for what you'll do next. But in this track I got what I expected, a solid and fun experimentation with the track aspect of remixing. In particular I liked the jump and loop in the beginning, was a very fun way to have the track start. Other than that, the overall feel of the track shifted, and really was taken over by your style of trackmaking.

    24th. Remix Practice by Jgeleta1 6.7/10

I thought the reusage of style of ramp and the flag made by ness was creative. And the personalization of the flag was a good addition too. I think this is a solid experimentation with the familiarity of remixing. As far as negatives go, I did not like the gravity shift as it was not smooth imo. If your're going to do something like that, I would recommend adding multiple gravities as then you're more likely to catch the rider. I also disliked how you cut off the foam pit, I would recommend removing parts that you want to get rid of altogether or changing them into something more suited to your remix.

Additional note: Ramp recreation was inventive, but nothing was there otherwise. And the recreated ramp was not positioned well to flow in the track.

    25th. Ximer by JulianBlack6.5/10

You made some truly interesting alternative concepts. The bulldozer and the parachute were great additions to add detail to the powerups. I also thought the hill and block were detailed nicely. It looks like a solid entry for the practice round. Some of the negatives I see, are the random sticks holding up the higher platforms. If done right they would be creative, but right now they look sloppy. Also to progress in the 1st round I would start thinking of ways to make consistent background detail.

    26th. RC4 Practice by OutaCtrl 6/10

I thought it was pretty fun. I thought you made some nice additions to the track aspect of the track. But other than double lining everything. it lacked detail and rather regressed from the original detail-wise, if you want to have success in the contest that can't happen. However, I think you did very well in manipulating, altering and extending the track aspect.

27th. Remix Contest Practice by wagon 5.8/10

It wasn't that great. The detail additions and the detail-to-track additions all appeared to mean well, but fell short in truly not adding anything great in particular to the track's overall feel. Rather it appeared to take a step back, because some of the additions felt out of place, namely the platform above the foam pit that upset the feel and flow of the track. However, the graffiti looked nice. It may have been better to expand on the graffiti art skatepark concept rather than leaving so many areas void of attention.
