reminds me of that time on TM, where elite authors votes counted as 20 a piece. All my tracks were off the front page on day 1. Honestly, that felt horrible. That being said, the
only time I downvote a track is when I think that its rating is beyond what it deserves. I assume that's what 95% of people who downvote my tracks are thinking. The thing about the + - rating system is that no single person can be too influential to one track. Back when the rating was 1-10, a 1/10 would literally destroy your chance of ever getting back onto the front page. It actually had a lot to do with luck and how many downraters were online at the time you were posting. That's why we need a more complex rating system if we truly want to be able to give tracks the ratings that they deserve (see
Different Rating System). The like/dislike system is just too simple for free rider tracks, but arguably could be better than a basic 1-10 or even 1-5 star system (maybe).
As for multiple accounts, I personally have 2. I asked Char and he was OK with it. I have several reasons for wanting 2 accounts:
- Sometimes I might want to experiment and see what people like without having to post it on my main account (because you can't delete tracks)
- I like to hold my main account to a certain standard with each track, and sometimes I like to mess around and make half-ass, or maybe just undetailed tracks.
- Maybe I lose all motivation to complete a track, so I could post the incomplete version on an alternate account.
I guess all of these could be resolved in different ways. Maybe give the ability to link two accounts together, but really, all we need is profile customization. Maybe the ability to categorize your tracks, decide which ones are displayed first, THE ABILITY TO DELETE A TRACK, EVEN IF ITS FOR A LIMITED TIME AFTER POSTING IT. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE THIS A FEATURE, but for now, having two accounts is the only reasonable solution for me. The reason that this is a problem is that it gives people an excuse to have multiple accounts (ones that are not being tracked and could be used for downvoting/upvoting/spam).
As for the trending section, I don't think there's all that much wrong with it. It's not like we are missing the good tracks. We just disagree with their ratings. It's not like hundreds of awesome tracks are being overlooked due + 1 for penguin or +1 if you like chicken. Maybe the track size (character count) could have something to do with how long a track stays on the trending list. That seems like it would actually solve a lot of complaints. The fact of the matter is that there simply are not enough people making good tracks for the trending section to be full of great new tracks all the time. (see
Officially Recommended Section)
And finally, to give the All-time best tracks the recognition they deserve, we need to do
Weekly/Monthly Challenges
I truly believe that if we do all of this, most of these complaints will virtually disappear.
Oh also, we need to be able to select our thumbnails. If people are misleading, their tracks will be disliked (at least by me). This would help people promote the best part of their tracks, and I believe 100% that it will do more good than harm.
