hi all ! we're starting to wrap up the last of the feat track discussions for 2024! starting with...

Olympus by alexander (https://www.freeriderhd.com/t/213610-olympus)

final vote: 4 yes, 6 no - decision, no feature.

there was some good discussion on the argument of what constitutes "enough" track for a feature. ive included most of it below, worth a read imo!

i think the main point against featuring it would be its size, though i dont think it is prohibitively small for a feature; mr..a has some tracks of almost the exact same size which are featured, rightly so too imo (https://www.freeriderhd.com/t/294206-the-second-empire-ft-stig). olympus is just pure eye candy from alex, the shading is striking, the clouds are gorgeous, the rock formations perfect. the track is also super fun, ive played it god knows how many times over the years, there are heaps of great route options for ghosters to try and optimise the track, cool use of gravities and boosts for gameplay variety, challenging without being frustrating, options for easier routes at the cost of more time on the clock... i love it, i thought it was deserving at the time and still feel this way today, even despite it being small than the average feat (especially today). nonetheless, what do we think?

simple, elegant yet striking shaping that really gives you a certain type of feeling when looking at and playing the track, a feeling that really makes you believe the textures youre riding are the drawings youre viewing (couldnt think of a better way to describe it). this is a powerful quality both olympus and jerry's tracks possess, and is the main argument for their feature. however, in jerry's case the track being too small has been used as an argument against featuring. vs in this case where its not seen as a negative thing?
the "it was made in 1 week" argument is a bit weak too imo
again olympus is a great track and it does have that stand out feature quality to it, so wont be upset if it gets feated. but if we're gonna use "its too small of a track" to disqualify other tracks from feature we should use that same justification here. theres not enough material in olympus to justify a feature imo, and this is something im particularly conscious of given the other tracks we've disqualified for similar reasons this year. feel free to disagree w me tho

having a look through votes this year, i have knocked back kano labs and carlisle ii explicitly due to lack of material, and at least elkheart was knocked back the larger voting group due to lack of material too (i didnt vote on elkheart though). maybe it's bias and/or elitism, but the difference in quality between these three examples and olympus/second empire is night and day to me, even if they are all of similar scale. this is an extreme example, but ive always held this by forlorn333 should be featured due to the insane standard of detail. small tracks with high quality detail have a bit more leeway for me than small tracks with less/lesser quality detail/ride/etc (as i argued last year in the case of temple run by ishu, though again an extreme version of this debate), which is where i stand on the aforementioned three examples vs olympus. olympus is a borderline case for certain, which is why i have been debating bringing it up for a vote for so long, and i can understand why people would vote no too.

to be clear, as well, me bringing up the length of time this track was made in was not an argument for it being featured but as a way to praise it; it's impressive, i love this track and i just wanted to glaze alex lol

Unsure about length, lonely dell whilst a great track for me is too small for consistency of length quality. No from me here.
Ocean descent is not good enough to constitute a feature, it's sparse for most of the track and doesn't bring anything to the table. Also no from me

Overall Lonely dell achieved: 5-2 which earned itself a feature.
Ocean descent achieved: 1-6 which did not earn itself a feature.

My view is if tracks are unfinished then the finished parts should be assessed. If you remove all of the unfinished parts then its clearly a feat. I do not agree that the addition of some unfinished parts negates the value of what's finished. And I don't even agree that the track is unfinished even if that's what chaos said; if a track is uploaded then its finished regardless of what state it's in. The fact of the matter is the track was uploaded in that state and will never be worked on and uploaded again, thereby, for all intents and purposes, it's finished. And from what my eyes see and from what my fingers gamed, it is clearly feat worthy

I come from a background of fine arts wherein the general school of thought is that no work of art is ever finished. Because it begs the question what makes a work finished? There's no set end point meaning the artist can continue to work on it for infinity, meaning the only thing that makes it "finished" is the artist's choice to stop working on it and exhibit / publish it. It's. In fact, this relates to one of the principles of art and design called "range of finish" and many many great artists use it to their advantage by deliberately leaving some parts less finished than others to create more contrast and range of visual language

All to say I wish authors would quit putting unfin or ntbf in their titles. Literally if he never said it was unfinished and had spent like 20 mins giving some thickness to the floating 1D sections of track near the bottom right to make it look a little more intentional then no one would have thought it was unfinished and it would be featured already. Not featuring it over something as small/trivial as that just seems like a spiteful and unfair punishment when every other aspect is so clearly feat worthy

Really interesting perspectives, and looking at the vote now it's really interesting how it swayed. I like how we all address the unfinished/"unfinished" aspect of the track and how differently we each approach/interpret this. It's difficult to write against featuring this or having an different perspective when we put down the assumption, belief, or frame that the "unfinished" label is the primary reason on the original decision or that it came from a place of spite, etc. Just want to note that Ramps + Portals NTBF, Path to Paradise -Not Finished and Bad Trip (NTBF) exist on the feat list.

Revisiting this track is definitely a mixed bag for me, I believe we're mostly in agreement with the ride itself and seeing this be brought back up for discussion makes me question whether I misweighed how impactful the ride really is. Ultimately, I think how we see(interpret) this incompleteness here is the make or break factor among our decisions, to me the incompleteness here takes form in a lack of intentional/tasteful visual cohesion; the disjoint, inconsistent presentation detracts here(just like if it were fleshed out it would add). I feel similarly when detail/design is rushed/poor in quality/isn't congruent to the artist's intended vision and/or standard throughout the rest of their work, sure there is more detail/stuff crammed in but what about it's effect towards the overall piece? I don't see this as a case of some parts being left bare to create more contrast and/or more range of visual language(range of finish).

I didn't mean to imply that it was a spiteful decision. it is more that I think there's a double standard when it comes to detail tracks that forego ride vs ride tracks that forego detail. it's most prevalent when there's any naked ride visible at all, a la "unfinished" tracks. I feel like the visual cue of "naked ride" flips a switch off for most people about what a feat track is. particularly in instances like supreme delight where there's a track that has stayed in the public consciousness for a decade as an incredible ride but lacking detail, it can't get a feat but an incredible detailed track with 10 seconds of a ride made as an afterthought can still be featured.

I understand that for some people detail is a requisite for a feat but ride isn't. it's a tale as old as the game itself. it's just my opinion that being interesting, fun, and creative in terms of gameplay (even with no detail) can be just as impressive as something that is purely aesthetically pleasing. if there's room on the feat list for tracks with superb detail that shirk ride, I think there's room for superb rides that shirk detail

I am aware this track is not featured. I also believe it should be. However, regardless of how finished it is, it is quite easily the best ride on FRHD, rivaled only by Practice Makes Perfect by OdysseusSupreme (which would also be on this list if it had any detail at all). It's a masterclass from Chaos-Fallen, a massive scale, and some of the most fun I've had on this game.

I think the artwork is phenomenal. The attention to detail is amazing and consistent throughout. The way the mechanical detailing is integrated with the ride is also really well done. I can see how you could argue that the robot body parts are disproportionate but honestly, forget proportions, the drawings are rad. Whatever technical drawing skills Nitro lacks he makes up for with his eye for design.

The track is also top notch. I got to the end without ever having gotten lost (and I wasn't missing a single star!!!!!)

Yes for the most part it's standard but it's not great. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm not saying it's not feature worthy, it's just not the quality that makes it the key point of the track. You have to deniliate between the two.

What nitro has done in two weeks is exceptional but we're here to give feedback.

All around very solid track, panda_rider 's best track so far! The ride is very fun. It's a great combo of easy, rideable terrain and some decision making that the player must do to get to the next star without it being too complicated.
The artwork that panda_rider added is also very fun and consistent with the style.
I've never played Zelda but seeing this track, (and the other terrific Zelda themed tracks for the remix contest), is a testament to me of the power of restraints in creativity. Limitations push us to make something we wouldn't have otherwise made.

With that being said I don't know how I feel about featuring tracks that have a significant amount of artwork done by other authors. Most players wont know what was drawn by Volund and what was drawn by panda rider.

e; I enjoy the ride but I can't get behind something like this obviously, it makes me question the integrity of the track and how many additional parts were just stolen from other authors(besides the remix track which is free game). Additionally, it's a contest entry and utilizing elements of tracks that are outside of Ataraxy is cheating and unfair for other contestants(feature discussion aside), hopefully it was a misunderstanding of what assets are remixable.

Wow really enjoyed this one, it's quite good in every aspect, a really well-rounded track. Really enjoyed the scale, how the ride and detail mix, and how many unique objects/set pieces there are. It's actually quite impressive how many and how varied they are, on top of that the shaping of them is really good here. Really dig how he used the assets here such as the statue that's sunken at the bottom, fun detail.

My advice for this would be visually to reserve the copy, paste to manmade objects(precise and structured stuff) while the organic shapes such as clouds could benefit from a more natural, drawn approach.

ill be the outcast voter for no, that's fine. but too much copy paste for my liking. for each object where there's more than 2, its just copy pasted. sadly that's the way it goes for a lot of tracks these days. i'm not discounting the detail or ride whatsoever. looks great. gz on feature, tho. just recommend giving each object its own characteristics and "personality", and not rely on the ness tools as much.

A few weeks ago Egona's track "The Mindless Wanderer" was suggested for a feature. The voters unanimously decided against featuring the track, but they left some helpful feedback.

Effort, completeness, length, and detail come together into a harmony which leaves an impact that feels complete & significant. I like this example. you're almost there, but this is kind of a master of none type track IMO. firstly detail, which is an aspect of many great tracks. as for this one, while it does look very good at a glance, its pretty derivative. like i can tell you really liked onyx (eryp track) when drawing the rocks, and the cliffs/rocky hills look like a sloppier rationalities (who i swear has got to have one of the most copied styles in all of free rider). + the beginning section clearly stands out as the part you sunk far more time into compared to the rest of the track, and for the quality of detail, for me to not be against featuring this the background of the right side and caves would be way more detailed. secondly, the ride. which is really inconsistent and unintuitive in some spots, leading to it not being the most fun track to play. i do like the layout of the track but its nothing outstanding. plus this is a cave track, which you yourself have done lots of already, which theres nothing necessarily wrong with, its just something to keep in mind of. tldr this track is good but it has a lot of things that hold it back

First time giving feedback, lets ******* goooo. I'm going to say no and the detailing of this track is going to be my reason for it; Usually, when we go about depicting many details in any art piece, we run into the problem of everything blending together visually, making a clutter, which is what happens here in my opinion. This is easy to fix, as you can look up and follow some basic principles of visually separating details when drawing. You can: 1. Use more empty space 2. Use line weight to emphasize any objects. A thicker or thinner outline would make a huge difference, especially in this game, where you cannot change the brush size 3. Use shading and values for foreground/ background and larger elements, and not just... the square rocks.

when you start doing something in any medium the best way to learn is to just DO. and do it quickly! i think you excel at this, likely more than most people in all honesty.
at this point i'm seeing rapid progress in finding out how exactly to both use the fr.app in new ways, but also in detailing style. these last few tracks from you have been really impressive in just how fast you're getting them out of the door. i've been working a track for year, you know? you've gotten eighty done in that time.

the difference is, and what i find that you struggle with, is the benefits of slowing down and taking your time can give you.
it gives you time to work on a bit of something, sit on it, and scrap it for something even better.
it gives you time to redo landings, jumps, checkpoint placements, make boosts consistent, loops feel smoother, tweak placements of things until they're really really REALLY in the pocket.
it gives you time to realize what you're actually trying to make! the ideas you start with can typically blossom into something you never could have imagined previously...
IF YOU GIVE THEM TIME.

i can see you as a very impulse driven person. this is a tremendous ability, an amazing advantage. all that i and others say here should not swerve you from your gut instinct, merely align yourself with what it's truly trying to tell you.

you've come a looooong ass way since "psychopathic cave". i've been watching you, wazowski keep it up, dont you dare take anything on the chin. this should all be bursting from you, and if you find yourself not driven to finish, there's absolutely nothing wrong with not finishing it. believe me, i'm one to talk, lol

Who are You?
What do You want?

you could spend the rest of your life answering these questions. occasionally, you may find yourself tempted to answer them in the form of art.

things i noticed in MW which can be easily fixed:
- cp placement is pretty poor, and can easily be fixed with a bit more thought. generally, you want to have cps spaced every 10-15 seconds OR directly after sections of ride that are unintuitive on first go and/or requires complex inputs. this is so players can spend more time enjoying the track and less time banging their head against an annoying section of ride, without feeling like youre holding their hand/removing the challenge. in MW you place cps closer to every 5 seconds or closer, which is unnecessary
- your detail is generally good, but uncohesive, especially from left to right. there's a nature scene in the top left, then cave section in the middle, then beach scene in the right, with no real reason for there being such a big shift. the cave is particularly jarring, when otherwise the beach and nature scenes could have been blended seamlessly together. further, the difference in detail quality is honestly stark; the left side is fantastic; youve connected lines well, there's generally good enough use of negative space to allow the dense detail to still breathe, there's great depth and a variety of things (characters, nature etc) to look at. the other side, however, is mostly horizontal straight lines, really poor copy + paste shading blocks, unconnected lines, sloppy rocks, brush... try to ensure what youre drawing makes sense and remains consistent throughout the whole track, even if it takes much longer. it's the easiest way to elevate your work, but will mean your tracks will take 10-50% longer... but you should absolutely leverage how quick you work to achieve this, as you could do this and still finish tracks before most others
- tweak your rides a bit so theyre more intuitive. sir human had a great comment about how your ride here felt a bit off-tempo. imo, rides are best when players dont have to manually hard brake and turn around for only one star; if you want parts that really slow down, create the ride in a fashion which facilitates this, rather than forcing the player to do the unnatural thing of braking. eryp and nitro do this really well, for example, and there's a couple great posts on this on the communal guide to ride creation

at large:
- feats take time, for all but the top .0001% of players. realistically, if a feat is what you want, 2 weeks is probably the minimum amount of time it will take you, perhaps a couple days less accounting for the 1.1 editor. your talent is clearly there, you just need to now take the time to ensure you dot your i's and cross your t's before uploading
- i might be looking too deep here, but i think what would help you spend more time on your tracks is to draw what you want, rather than what you might think others want/what will get you a feat. find a theme, a game, a book, a song, any form of inspiration, and make a track about it. do something completely out there, itll not only help keep you engaged but also frankly will increase the odds of a feature. we love creativity, dont stay within the bounds of what is and isnt 'acceptable' in this game; get abstract, do something we;ve never seen before, or approach traditional styles of drawing in this game, in a new way! you are unique with unique experiences, likes, dislikes etc, show us what youve got. yes, this is a game, but the trackmaking side of things is much closer to art - get artistic : )
- seek out advice during the trackmaking process, it will make a difference. imagine if you got even 1 of these 7 people to have a look at MW, and the difference it could have made! we are all always willing to lend a hand, give some advice, provide a new perspective; it's how we all developed in the game too.

i know you have it in you to make something special, you just gotta lock in o7

while there were no major contests in 2022, bar remix contest 10 back in january which saw 5 feautured tracks (+ elis late entry), for 2023 there has been the pokemon contest in late 2022-2023 (for claritys sake i count this as a 2023 contest as no featured tracks for that were released in 2022) and the remix contest 11. 7 feats from pokemon and 3 from remix so far, plus 4 from external sources makes 14 featured tracks. yes you could consider that to be too many, and yes that was the basis (if im not mistaken) for changing the methodology for featuring tracks to the vip consensus, but tbh imo of the 14 featured tracks thus far, 12 of them i would say are deserving (make of that what you will). you could make a case for featured track fatigue as you vaguely referenced, albeit subconciously in your post. yes there have been lots of feats recently but i would say that they are practically all well deserving. the pokemon contest saw some incredible tracks, and hopefully remix will see further high quality featured tracks.

e, and the last point you made about the best of the best, well i mean it is already evident that what qualifies as the best differs from vip to vip, as seen in the fact that smithereens or la boite did not receive unanimous yeses to get featured. would you have featured computer by seasnails? an average joe wouldnt call that track the best of the best, but because of the novelty of what he did with the computer and the practically flawless execution, that in itself is what made computer feature worthy
