Dream Machine - track editor

an expansion of the track editor by Calculus, the Dream Machine allows you to import objects into the editor that you can rotate, flip, scale, and place anywhere in your track. these objects can be anything you want (ramps, trees, clouds, circles, entire tracks, etc.)

1. Select a level – there is a "Blank level" option with only the starting line, and a "Custom level" option that allows you paste in a trackcode. to import a trackcode from a file, use the "Import" button at the top right. the level is not affected by the eraser or the other tools.

2. Select an object – use the cube or circle object, or use “Custom” to paste in your own object. to make custom objects, draw something in the FRHD editor and use that trackcode.

3. Edit your object – use the keyboard shortcuts below to rotate, flip, and scale your objects.

4. Place an object – choose the spot you want to place the objects with your cursor and left click to place it. you can also use ctrl + left click to more precisely place the object.

5. Erase an object – choose the Eraser button and left click to erase the full object, or use ctrl + left click to erase individual lines from the object.

6. Move your camera – you can use shift + left click and drag to move the camera, "+" to zoom in, and "-" to zoom out

6. Export the track – click "Export" in the top-right corner to save your track with your objects added! and you can put that code into the FRHD editor to play and draw.

here are some keyboard shortcuts for editing your objects:

"R" - rotates object clockwise
shift + "R" - rotates object counter-clockwise

"F" - flips object horizontally
shift + "F" - flips object vertically

"S" - increase object size
shift + "S" - decrease object size

ctrl + "R" - does more gradual rotation
ctrl + "S" - does more gradual scaling

left click with object - place object
ctrl + left click with object - place objects off the grid / more precisely

left click with eraser - erase placed objects
ctrl + left click with eraser - erase lines from placed objects

shift + left click and drag to move camera
"+" - zoom in
"-" - zoom out

notes:

if you use the "Custom level" option or the "Import" option, power-ups in that trackcode will not show up in this editor, but will still be in your exported code. power-ups in a "Custom" object will not be saved.

the eraser only effects objects inserted in your current session, and does not effect levels or previously inserted objects.

if you import a custom item and then use the eraser, when you press the "Custom" object button again, select "Cancel" and your item will reappear.

bugs I'm aware of:

[fixed] the scenery lines are on top of the physics lines, which is backwards from the FRHD editor and can be visually confusing

[fixed] the eraser only erases objects with black physics lines. if an object has only scenery lines, the eraser won't erase it

when exporting, sometimes the trackcode will have commas leftover from erasing or decimals added to coordinates (this doesn't adversely effect the track and importing the trackcode into the FRHD editor and saving there will fix this)​

 

this track editor tool is a real game changer, and for me it's all due to the custom pattern tool. the first use case i thought of was for Coated_Badger 's isometric track, where he has repeating patterns specific to each structure. he can streamline and hasten the process by duplicating the patterns and finishing the accents of buildings in a matter of seconds. hell, with the cube tool/a custom cube size, he could do an entire build in minutes instead of hours

for myself, i can see use this editor for things like starry backdrops, grass, bushes, flower fields, really anything that is tedious and does not need to be random. the circle tool is amazing too, cutting out the need to count pixels or grid squares in order to make a perfect circle. this editor reminds me somewhat of the tools available to artists on Procreate, and is a really big improvement on the standard editor. i highly recommend people play around with this tool, particularly with the new options and time saves it affords everyone

appreciate the love! I'll mention that I have other ideas for default levels and objects, but these just came to mind as a few that would be fun to play around with to start. the circle I made by hand (using grid and noobcurves), I'm not sure if it is "perfect" or not but I got it pretty close I think. as I make more objects and levels, I'll add them to the editor.

one thing that might be cool is if people share their custom objects and levels! I can make a list of codes in the first post, if you have an object that you made that you found useful, and people can use the custom object option to import them.

Bout to freshen the game

 

this is perfect for some tracks im working on, im sure this will be spectacular once its finished

also one thing i just realised is that shading block will take a matter of seconds now which is awesome

 

new feature: pressing "s" will increase the size of the object, pressing "s" + shift key will decrease the size

and fixed some bugs: black physics lines will appear on top of scenery lines like they should, and the eraser can erase both black and scenery lines

the resizing of the cube objects don't match up with isometric grid in this version because of the scaling size, so here's a version that only doubles and halves the size that does work with the grid/cubes (and adds more cube objects): Aurora

if you guys want to use this as a sharethread for your small tracks you've made with the editors, feel free! I'd love to see them

 

update to allow for fine-tuning/small adjustments:

holding the CTRL key allows you to place objects off the default grid
CTRL + R does more gradual rotation
CTRL + S does more gradual scaling

 

would it be possible to add an extra brush thats like a square but filled in?
something small enough to avoid spam (ppl tryna make the largest track ever), but big enough to help with shading in large drawings

if you're not aware, you can click "Custom" and paste the code in there. I'll consider adding something like this as a default item, but creating your own shading block that you can tailor to your own needs is probably the best option (choosing physics or scenery lines, filling with shorter or longer lines, etc.)

small track I made from circles using the Dream Machine. I placed overlapping circles, then used ctrl+left click to erase the overlapping spots to create the tunnel. (power-ups and small changes were later made in the frhd editor)

this updated eraser can also be used to erase unneeded parts of a shading block, to create variety in patterns (like drawing windows with a bunch of texture then erasing random bits from it, as shown in the attached image), or any number of different applications!

new editor for you guys! the Sandman editor works similar to the Dream Machine, but has a few interesting updates:

• hold right click to place objects like a brush
• the grid size matches the height + width of your object, so your objects will tile correctly
• the editor automatically removes duplicated/overlapping lines of your placed objects, so no worries about double lines

as a result, it works pretty sweetly as a pixel art maker! but wait! there's more!

if you hold ctrl while you right click, you can use the object brush without the grid. you could technically make a brush tool of any kind:
