here's a private soundcloud link of a new song i wrapped up this week. got a new Epiphone Wilshire guitar which sounds fantastic & plays like a dream, thought i'd give it a true test with some 70s style guitar solos etc

this'll be part of my first album releasing later this year, all this type of vibe

i don't really make any of that chillhop stuff anymore or the random genres i messed about with. got a new direction and sticking to it

any feedback welcome, i'm happy with the mix i've done on this one but if you notice anything would be good to know

The sound is good - maybe experiment with different instruments if theyre available to you or if you even play other instruments
Also what inspired you to previously make chillhop music?

 

Guitar tone is good, really pops at certain points, but at other times becomes lost with all the other instruments going on. I feel this can be fixed with the final mix. If you're going for that 70's guitar instrumental sound, I would recommend listening to Masayoshi Takanaka. He formats his songs just like any other song, with a verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus structure but all with guitar. It doesn't sound like he's riffing/soloing over a chord progression. Sounds dynamic, is interesting throughout, and has climactic points.

Zgolex thanks man, yeah i play guitar, bass and some piano. i could try some more sounds to spice it up a bit for sure. the chillhop was a phase, listen to it a lot for easy listening purposes so thought i'd try my hand at it for a bit. but gnarly guitar stuff is my jam

really enjoyed this. how are you recording the guitar with that tone? sounds crisp as all getout

would it be too much to ask for the stems? had an idea, wondering if it was just in my head or it could be out loud....

cheers dude got my tone dialed in and can always replicate it now. i'll break it down, might be long winded lol but here goes -

guitar -
Epiphone Wilshire with P90 pickups (use neck pickup,both, and bridge at various times, both volume knobs rolled off a fraction, both tone knobs at full)

pedals -
Strymon Deco tube saturation and Architect V3 overdrive running stereo (Direct In) to a Presonus studio 24c audio interface

plugins -
Positive Grid Bias Amp Simulator, custom settings (run the tubes in amp real hot, 2 mics, open back amp, light compression, slight room reverb, no noise gate, gain at noon, bass rolled off slightly, mids at 7, treble at 8, volume at 9)
Waves Renaissance Axx compresser (adjust threshold to make lead pop)


and yeah man i can send you the individual stems for sure, i'll pm you over the next couple days


TheLazyCat thanks, yeah i don't really like a big wafty sub bass, can be fatiguing on the ears. i wanted my bass to be audible on all mediums (phone speakers, car speakers, headphones, computers, sound systems etc) i could work on the low end but don't want to lose the clarity, i'll see how it goes

 

Also make the guitar wider. And wich daw are you using?

 

And can you also send me the stems?

Nice track overall. I think you should change up the drums in the intro a bit but other than that, good music achieved.

 

wider really? the rhythm guitars are double tracked and hard panned left and right, and the lead guitar was recorded in full stereo.
i use Ableton 11 Suite
