Contest Box Contest: Big Box Edition

Just want to clear up some things about my track being unfinished, empty, in-cohesive etc. These are all valid but I thought I'd just explain.

So basically the entire track was just a narrative of some events in my life, each part representing or symbolizing something. Of course having only seen the track from my point of view I thought it was really great but it is clear now that it doesn't make any sense to everyone else when I haven't made the narrative clear, obviously. (poor judgement on my part haha).

Narrative:
Just over 3 years ago, I moved from * to Canada on very short notice. It was a massive culture change and overall quite distressing. I felt very emotionally close to * as a place, I had many close friends and lots of great experiences. I had lots of struggles with moving, as anyone at that age, and a hard time accepting my separation; you could say, "I was lost" (I also went from a grade size of 40, to a middle school with over 1000 kids which was horrifying at the time).

I feel that in the last year and a half, I have really found my place here. Overall I feel that I've matured in my relationship with the large part of my life that I spent in * . So rather than trying to crawl back to it, I've accepted my distance thankfully but still appreciate any time it comes back to relevancy, "letting go".

Explanation:
I began the track knowing what I wanted to emulate in the editor, but not really knowing how it was to be done. I decided to start by just literally drawing * using building, architecture references in a realistic 3d perspective, and then later settled on the idea of having a volcano eruption to demonstrate that it was being destroyed. Having the ride underneath, or in the volcano clearly wasn't the best idea frhd/art wise, but for me it was just a way of emulating how I would've been stuck underneath this burden, and that to enjoy life as it is now, I would have to let go of what it once was. In retrospect, zycerak's idea of coming out of the top of the volcano is what I should've really gone with as it would be really epic frhd wise but also probably be a cooler way to represent me getting out of this, rather than just coming out from underneath. In truth, the spaceship was just something I drew in the last 2 weeks after I was getting slammed by dante and others for more than a half of the track being just white space , but it turned out to suit the narrative quite well, as my escape pod or, as safety as it's written on one of the right wings. It also ended up being my favorite individual part of the track, it just didn't fit into the visual theme at all.

So in reality, I accomplished (more than) all I was planning on doing. Although, the more I look at it, the more I see how much more I could've done and how pretty much everyone is calling it unfinished. These comments are all entirely justified, not trying to defend myself on that part haha.

The title, "In My Place" and lyrics on the track are from a FANTASTIC Coldplay song, 100% listen to it if you have never done so. I just thought the lyrics reasonably exemplified the feelings I was going through, nothing more there.

There it is. Huge thanks to everybody who had helped me with this track, and all the positive feedback has been quite awesome!

i think i should clear up my critique a little bit

i really love the fact you put a story and significance behind the track. i know it probably wasn't clear to the rider, but it does not have to be. the track is yours and i am really glad that you made it yours. what i love about creating art is that you can put as much meaning and personality into their piece as a form of personal expression, because theres truly no better way to express yourself through with art. and even as a viewer, the way you look at a piece of art and the way you interpret it is an expression of yourself as well. you can have a room of a hundred people plus the artist and ask them how they interpret a piece, and everyone will give a different answer. and that's why i love abstract art, the more unclear something is the more personal it becomes to the artist and the viewers alike. there's far less tangible things with universal meanings so everyone will have wildly different interpretations more heavily influenced by their personality and personal experiences.

point is, i want you to continue that style of trackmaking. honestly i think that was what my biggest critique was, its almost like you didnt push your personal meaning far enough. in your track, the town, the ride, the volcano, and the spaceship didn't seem to interact with each other so any narrative kind of gets lost a bit. you said the volcano was meant to show how the buildings were being destroyed? then lets see them get destroyed. lets see the ride really be buried under that volcano or lets see some spaceships come down and interact with the environment a bit

and just to reemphasize like the advice i gave in the last paragraph was just very specific to that specific track and specifically after i had heard what the story was. i guess my main point is the interaction of the elements. get as abstract with the metaphors as you want, the more abstract and confusing the better in my opinion. i guess my critique was mainly about the way the elements were displayed than the elements themselves if that makes sense.

but yeah overall i think you have a lot of room to grow as an author especially in terms of originality and meaning. i would have loved to seen you fill the whole box and have a more finished entry but what you still have is highly respectable considering i was too lazy to even make an entry

also just to note i didnt read any of the other judges critiques and forgot what i wrote for my critique so your message might have not even applied to me at all but whatever i wanted to say that anyways and im also preemptively defending a track im working on so im not called a hypocrite in the distant future

was a good contest. Some very meaningful tracks! And some more just for fun. Nice mix, but hard competition. I wouldn't have survived. I am a mere minnow compared to all these sharks.

thanks for the explanation dude, and im glad that frhd has become a 'safe spot' for ya while adjusting to a new way of life. from my side i prolly shouldnt have been pushing you so hard to complete the track, but the main reason was because i knew how good it couldve turned out had you dedicated some more time. in retrospect i shouldve given some more thought about the whole thing and stopped myself and said, 'hey maybe not everyone has as much free time as a loser like me who places frhd in front of his exams (i failed 2/5 of them btw, thanks to bbce and coager getting me celeste (thanks coager luv u))'. if me pushing you to do more made you uncomfortable you in any way then truly i am sorry, but im not trying to bring the attention onto me, so i will stop here about that.

im very glad that you *appear* to have distanced yourself from your previous life (idk if that was the right term to use), and i hope in time you can have a better life in canada. new beginnings are hard, i know, and having a community like frhd with people you can talk to about stuff can help a lot.
