Just because someone is poor doesn't mean they didn't "work as hard as richer people." There are many circumstances that can lead to how much money a person has. Some may be because of their own poor decisions: gambling, poor investing, drug addiction. HOWEVER, the person could have been hacked and had all his/her money stolen. He/She could be heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Maybe the people who support their family got into a freak car accident and can't work for several months. Maybe they got sick with cancer or had a heart attack. Maybe they were decent, good-hearted, middle-class people but something terrible happened and now they're living by paycheck. This isn't unlikely: The number one leading causes of death in the US are, in order: cancer, heart failure, and COVID-19. Around 600,000 people die of cancer every year and there's a good chance someone is heavily affected by this, not only emotionally, but financially. Maybe someone got into a severe depression or an illness like COPD. There are many reasons why someone could be "poor" and it is not always THEIR FAULT.

In conclusion, I was baffled by that incorrect assertion and hope you use some more brain cells when making these kinds of comments.
