Mainly just intuition/anecdotal. Everyone seems to know a lifelong Democrat or non voter that is voting for Trump this year. Also, distrust in institutions right now is very high, which is one reason the polls are so skewed, people (especially Trump voters) don't want to give their political views to a stranger over the phone.

However, these institutions have been running polls for decades, and probably take exactly your point into account. and that distrust in institutions that you are talking about is why we focus on the average of polls, discarding outliers to get a better representation of what the election is likely to represent.

Overall the polls are created to try and give a best estimate of what the election will look like, and i'm pretty sure that a majority of polls are not corrupt/biased towards the democrats. After all, if trump has such a big representation, why are only ~1% of polls, biased under either republicans or democrats, favouring trump?

 

personally i don't give any information to strangers over the phone whether its about politics or not
also it's probably the area i live in but i don't know any lifelong democrats or non voters voting for trump and if anything it's probably the other way around in my neck of the woods

also - it's sad there are adults in this country who are "lifelong non voters"

 

Trump is a sad symptom of the rampant racism and disinformation that’s permeated our country for a long time, and I can only hope that the people vote against his toxic ideology so we can work on healing as a nation.

and I know you think that there is virtually no chance of him winning, just humour me and suppose somehow the election matches/is similar to the polls

 

swap Biden with trump, liberals with conservatives, democrats with republicans, and you finally get an accurate representation of what is happening.

is this a joke or something? You've completely misrepresented the first two for your own benefit. They presume that chances of one winning, not the overall amount of votes
As for the last one, the averages for those polls give Hillary only a ~2% lead, which is accurate to what she actually got (remember she got 3 mil more votes than trump)
