Right now, if you want to read the post someone quoted, you can just click the little arrow in the quote box and it'll lead you right there.

What I'm proposing is for there to be something that works the other way around, hear me out. Say someone has posted something like an awesome track or a controversial opinion. You'd wanna see the direct replies to that post, wouldn't you? Well to do that now, you need to scroll down and look for them.

My idea is that there should pop up an arrow onto the post that's being quoted with links to the posts quoting it. To make things easier and to improve the QOL-aspect of this feature, hovering over the little arrow should open a popup that shows you the contents of the message.

Quotes already contain the comment ID, or whatever you want to call it, of whichever comment they're quoting, so I imagine it's not an impossible feature to implement.

edit: additional idea, actually implement community ideas so this section of the forum gets attention :secretcat::thumbsup:

That would mean that the comments have to be updated after they've been posted which would be a bit of a pain, would be a nice feature tho

    ? no ?

for example, do all your comments get updated after you change name or description, gain a new tag(contest winners oa and such) or get a like?

thers right no you dont because those are in no way a part of your comment lol

I'm talking about the way the quoting system seems to work currently. It literally copies the text to quote, not linking or anything. That's why if you quote a message and they edit it afterwards your quote won't change. Quoting isn't dynamic.

but the little arrow always sends you to the correct comment does it not?
I imagine it would be possible to pull the comment as it is written into a little popup is possible if you code it different than how the quote system works. Nothing seems to limit the possibility of that that I can think of.
Then again, I'm not tech savvy and haven't looked into how the comments here work. I don't know like can you pull up say, comment number 1234 the same way you can link to it by just changing the number in the quote like I did. The little arrow here directs to comment 1234.

edit: they would have to pull the number of the quoted comment from the little BB code thing and then link it to that comment. This obviously could be abused to an extent by just changing the post ID or whatever you wanna call it. I don't see a point to doing so, though.
Also, would be awesome if we lost the ability to change the name and content of whoever we're quoting and instead it just maintained the post ID so all the other info would fill in automatically. This way deleted posts would actually be deleted and edits would make it into the quote. This here could be abused to make some funny conversations, though, so possibly maintain the original post in there and have an ability to see the current version by a toggleable option.

edit2: the previous edit seems like a possible implementation to me, since every quote already contains the post ID of whatever they're quoting, so long as the quotes haven't been messed with. Most of them probably haven't been.
Just make the website read the postID part of this here code [QUOTE="username, post:[B]postID[/B], user:userID"}yourposthere[QUOTE} and then there you go, your new dynamic quotes are implementable. hooray! just gotta make them now o-o
I'm sure the website also saves the previous versions of edited comments (like it saves deleted ones) so you can see the typos and other fixes/additions people have made to their comments. So I don't think it's an issue that would stop this from being a possible feature to implement at this point.

This is a really good idea, do you mean like how Reddit is set up in a way?

    NO
JUST THAT YOU CAN FIND REPLIES EASIER

on reddit you find comment replies directly attached onto comments that are under posts in subreddits.
how is what im suggesting in any way similar? the quoting post wouldn't be located mainly underneath the post they're quoting, would just be viewable from there, or just linked to there.

in other words, if that didnt make sense to your 2d brain, if you quote something, your post wouldnt appear as a new thread of comments underneath what youre replying to. you would just see LINKS to replies on posts, to not shuffle existing threads.

I believe that can be arranged :secretcat:

in the form of a tampermonkey script I’ll make :p

edit: maybe I didn’t quite get what you were trying to say, so let me say it back to you. Said script would add a button to a quote or message that shows every message that quotes said message.. if that makes any sense

Sure thing, but read the edit and tell me if that’s what you want. Or reword the thread

yea, so every time a comment is quoted, somewhere under the comment, say next to the like or something, there would be a little link to the messages quoting it. just like there already is a link in every quote to the comment they're quoting, but the other way around.

Would be cool if it did. I like it this idea, makes everything much easier for mods to answer questions directly from members in a thread. And for anyone else hosting a contest/event.
