at one point, the animal that laid the egg would not be qualified a chicken any longer, the further you go back down the ancestral line. With each subtle change between parents and children as meiosis occurs down at the DNA level, the animals look less and less like their forefathers. Therefore, the egg must have come first, laid by a different creature altogether.
Of course if you claim that these tiny differences are too subjective and that technically every animal present in a particular chicken's family line is part of the same species, then we may not use different words for animals, given every living thing on this planet came from the same bacterial ancestor billions of years ago. The fine line has to be drawn at some point to decide whether a new kind of animal has started, my friend
