Is it a bad idea to go to a nice school in a notoriously crime ridden neighborhood?

 

Literally a description of the college I'm probably going to

 

Um ya cuz then the crooks rob ur arse

 

I feel like the campus should be safe and guarded?? It's a really big school but it's surrounded by borderline slums. Idk I'll look more into it but in order to leave campus any time to take the metro somewhere or to drive home or something I'd have to pass through some sketchy areas. If anyone has any experience with this help a brotha out

 

The school I'm looking at is really big, like 43k enrolled but its right in the slums too. I'd be scared to walk off campus, but the actual campus itself has more cops than most small towns, and their only job is to patrol the campus. As long as you stay in a car when you leave campus you should be fine I'd think

 

Yeah I'm looking at about the same, 39k students, everything I've read points to it not being too much of an issue if you're smart about it but the problem is that there is no student housing after sophomore year so I'd end up having to rent something small for a lot downtown or split an apartment with some students closer to campus which seems unsafe because of the area. Also mine's in no small town lol we're talking Philadelphia, which could also be really inconvenient for having a car...

 

Ah, see mines got student housing for all 4 years. i understand the car thing though, mines in Cincinnati, so having a car is expensive af because of parking on junk. Plus its almost useless with how small the campus is

 

Yeah I don't know, all this seems unnecessarily expensive snd difficult, I was planning on going to a state school or community college for my first two years to save some cash and then transfer out of state, but with the housing deal I might just have to rethink this as one of my options lol

 

Yeah, colleges are weird, and its all about the money

 

What are you guys planning to pursue in college/already are pursuing?

I was thinking about business, but my parents said they thought I would be a good lawyer and that idea is very appealing to me. I could still major in business in college and if I decide in college that I don't want to go to law school I can just be a businessman.

 

Aerospace Engineering Major and I'm thinking about minoring or doing a dual major in computer science. I probably won't just because of all the extra work

 

I was thinking about education, or possibly some sort of design related job. I'm not big into business (I wish I was though lol) but I'd like to be able to use passion for the arts in my work somehow. Urban studies and Geography seem to be at the forefront of my mind right now so we'll see where that interest takes me. The sciences interest me too.

Hopefully if I find myself pursuing education we actually see some improvements in the American education system? I'm not so sure about going into education with the way things are right now lol

 

That's if I'm being realistic. Secretly I'd love to push myself so deep into debt with some stupid art school and spend the rest of my life crapping out murals or something, that's the dream my dude

 

Honestly I've thought about becoming a teacher before simply because I dislike so many of my own and I know I would be such a better teacher than they are

 

Im currently studying the right subjects to become a historian, journalist or businessman. Preferably I drop the business and maths stuff next year, do all Englishes and History's and pursue a career in writing or history. Currently my ideal job is a journalist
