"bu-bu-but he's learning!! why so hard on him?!?"
Really it's just bs. Nobody learns their skill through copying. Not to out anyone here, but it's the hard work and persistence that leads to their improvement, not their copying.

I agree, but if you're trying to make something look realistic, there is only one style. The realistic style. All this "you copied my style" -**** is just retarded because there aren't many (if any) different ways to draw realistically.

I agree, I should have found a style by now. But I originally detailed on my iPad; which denotes a year of crappy tracks. And I'm still finding a style tbh, because making tracks that look the same again and again is boring. Whether my recent wip looks like it's a copy, I've made it obvious that I don't reference your tracks to draw.
I agree, but I also think that not everything should be labeled as a copy immediately.

Think of all the "dirt jump" tracks that are out there. Thousands. Not one is labeled as a copy, even though the styles are even closer than mine and Crypt's. So it makes even less sense to discredit someone's hard work and persistence, when they spent hours on a dinky tree.

The difference between the thousands of dirt tracks and this one, however, is that the people who draw them dont actively go out of there way to make them the same. None of goof's tracks look like anyone elses, and he does dirt tracks, whereas when drawing more realistic stuff most people find someone to copy to start off with

Saying that there isnt many ways to detail realistically is stupid- look at Nasrani, lolz, Cataclysm and Crypt for example. None of them look the same, but they all do heavy nature stuff. It comes down to how much effort you want to put into creating your own stuff, or whether you want to be like someone else.

And saying that someone else copies doesnt warrant you copying

The detail in that reference picture looks like Crypt's style though.

Yes there are. Many users here go for realism and strive for different ways to convey it. You can go for basic realism, heavy realism, implied realism, etc.

Omg so basically looking at the Mona Lisa and drawing out a flawless copy over many failed attempts until you finally muster up the skill isn't learning? You will learn nothing about facial structure by learning to draw it? Nothing about shading? Nothing about distant landscapes? Nothing about forgetting to draw eyebrows?

Seriously though how can people honestly say that copying doesn't help when many users here are living proof. Simply because you yourself came to this game with a prerequisite doesn't mean you know how everyone else learned. Some of us were a blank slate and learned from others. It's literally not logically disagreeable.

If you look at that reference picture, there aren't really that many ways to draw it and to still make it look as realistic as possible.

Nowhere did I say "realistic as possible". I said "realism". Which is defined as representing the matter truthfully and without artificiality or fantasy elements. You can make an outlining that fits realism, so long as it's logically consistent with nature or structures. You can slightly shade and imply the rest. Or you can full on hit every detail. Don't conflate realism with picture-perfect results. That's not the point I'm getting at here.
